TOWCESTER RACECOURSE.

Introduction:
Truly one of the most picturesque racecourses in Britain, Towcester racecourse first opened its turnstiles in 1928.
The course and facilities are located on the Easton Neston parklands. Historically, the whole area was owned by the Hesketh family. Although in recent times, large parts of the estate have been sold on, the family have maintained their ownership of Towcester racecourse. In fact, the current Lord Hesketh is chairman of the racecourse company, and oversaw a recent seven point five million pound redevelopment of the course facilities.
Towcester is a very popular course, and this may be due in no small measure to the fact admission to the course is mostly free of charge. Of the 18 race meetings between October and June, only the fixtures on Boxing Day and Easter Monday involve a ten pounds admission fee.

Track facts:

Towcester specialises in the staging of national hunt racing.
The course is run right handed, and although it is one mile six furlongs in circumference, it has some sharp bends.
The steeplechase course has ten jumps laid out in the following circuit pattern: an initial plain fence, the first open ditch, three more plain fences, the water jump, a plain fence, the second open ditch, and the remaining two plain fences, these last two fences being sited in the home straight.
The hurdles course has six flights, the last two being situated in the home straight.
Although the obstacles on both courses are relatively easy to jump, the Towcester circuit is probably the toughest national hunt test in the world. From the turn out of the home straight, the track descends for the first six furlongs. It then begins a climb which continues for the next mile, including a sharp climb to the first fence in the home straight.
On soft or heavy going, Towcester is a severe stamina test. It sometimes pays to support gallopers who have won over a longer distance. If the going is particularly heavy, it may even be best to support a plodder.
Previous course winners should always be added to a short list of potential winners.
