Introduction:
The initial nineteenth century race meetings in the Taunton area were based in several different locations, and had varying degrees of success.
However, in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the strength of the Bridgewater Hunt led to the development of a racecourse just outside Bridgewater. This course survived until the start of the twentieth century.
In 1927, a group of seven businessmen set up the Taunton Racecourse Company, and secured a site which had been used as a previous venue for horse racing. The land at Orchard Portman was sold to the company by Viscount Portman, and work on the current course soon commenced.
Situated off the Shoreditch Road, prior to 1840, the land purchased for the racecourse had been the site of the ancestral home of the Portman family. Indeed, the back straight of the current course runs over the site of the former house, while the rest of the course is situated on top of the former orchard and gardens.
After the 1927 formation of the racecourse company, racing began almost immediately. The first race being the Shoreditch Selling Hurdle, staged on the twenty first of September 1927.
In the early years of racing, the underlying Somerset red clay soils were responsible for considerable water retention, which in turn led to heavy going. During the building of the M5 motorway, displaced soil was used to bank up the racecourse bends and back straight. In recent years, considerable work has also been completed to improve the drainage of the course. The net result of all this work, is between November and April, Taunton is able to stage 14 competitive race meetings.

Track facts:

Taunton specialises in national hunt racing.
The track is run right handed over a sharp oval measuring one mile two furlongs in circumference. There are slight undulations and a short run in to the winning post.
The steeplechase course has seven fences laid out in the following circuit pattern: an initial plain fence, an open ditch, a plain fence, the second open ditch, and then another three plain fences. There are three fences in the home straight, with falling ground providing some problems in the approach to the last fence.
The hurdles course has five flights, the last two being sited in the home straight.
In most races, with the possible exception of the 3 mile 3 furlong chase, pace is preferred to stamina.
