Racing at Wexford

Introduction:

Wexford racecourse is situated in the sunny south east of Ireland. Indeed, Irish meteorological office statistics show, in comparison to the remainder of Ireland, the region around Wexford receives an extra hour of daily sunshine. This may explain why the crowds of race goers at the Wexford races have a happy and friendly demeanour.

The beginnings of horse racing in the Wexford area can be traced back to race meetings which were staged on reclaimed bog. Although these fixtures enjoyed popular support when they first began during the eighteen seventies, by 1902, support had dwindled, and the races were abandoned.

In front of an estimated crowd of seventeen thousand race goers, racing at Wexford was reborn on Monday, fifteenth of October 1951. The new site at Bettyville soon established itself as am important racing venue, and it has  continued to be popular, with  a steady growth in crowds being recorded over the last ten years.

The course stages around eleven days of racing. This includes, a weekend fixture in late October, and seven separate meetings staged on Fridays. The races often attract large fields, plus leading jockeys from both codes.
