Racing at Sligo

Introduction:

Described by the world renowned poet, William Butler Yeats, as the land of hearts desire, the countryside around Sligo is truly breathtaking. On either side of the town and racecourse, the mountains of Benbulben and Knocknara, stand like two timeless sentinels. Their majestic natural beauty just adds to the viewing pleasure of the spectators who attend the Sligo races.

There is a strong history of horse racing in the Sligo area. The first recorded meeting taking place at Bowmore, on Rosses Point, in 1781. Unfortunately, for the next one hundred and seventeen years, political strife and factional fighting meant the race meetings were intermittent. For all that, the Sligo Journal reported in 1893, the races were well supported by the local gentlemen and their ladies, a trend which has continued to the current day.

In 1898, a new course was established at Hazelwood, and racing continued on the course until 1942.

After a thirteen year hiatus, racing returned when the current fifty six acre racecourse site staged its first meeting in 1955.

Sligo stages eight summer meetings, and every day of racing is a mixture of competitive flat and national hunt races. The two day meeting in August follows on closely behind the Galway Festival, and it receives support from race goers who want to sample a few days more of summer relaxation and exciting racing.
