Introduction:
Leopardstown racecourse is surrounded by the natural amphitheatre of the Dublin Hills. Even so, on clear days, it is also possible to glimpse the outline of the distant Killarney Hill.
Located in the district of Foxrock, Leopardstown is rather surprisingly, the sole surviving racecourse within the Dublin city limits. Being just eight kilometres from the city centre, the course is easily accessible to both Irish and British race goers, and as such, is a very popular racing destination.
Opened in 1888, Leopardstown was designed and built by Captain George Quinn. It is said, Captain Quinn used the successful course at Sandown Park as the template for his development at Leopardstown.
For seventy nine years the racecourse developed its racing programme, but during the same years, Dublin continued to grow. By 1967, the racecourse was in danger of being swallowed up for property development. To safeguard Leopardstown for the Irish nation, during 1967, the racecourse ownership passed to the Irish Racing Board.
Now under the umbrella of Horse Racing Ireland, Leopardstown currently stages around twenty three days of consistently high calibre horse racing. The highlights of the flat season are the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial in May, the Independant Waterford Wedgewood Phoenix Stakes in August, and the Baileys Irish Champion Stakes, which is Irelands only world series race, and is run in September.
The national hunt season has many fine races, including several Grade and Listed races held during the four day Christmas Festival, the Pierse Hurdle and A I G Europe Champion Hurdle days in January, and the Hennessey Cognac Gold Cup in February.

Track facts:
Leopardstown stages high grade flat and national hunt racing.
The racing circuits are all run left handed over parallel oval courses measuring around one mile six furlongs in circumference.
The flat track has easy bends, and suits galloping types. There is a descent between the ten furlong and mile markers, with a corresponding climb from the two furlong pole to the finishing line. From the home turn to the winning post, the home straight is only two and a half furlongs, so eventual winners are usually close to the pace on the home turn.
The steeplechase course has ten fences.
The hurdles course has seven flights.

Reserved Enclosure Ticket.
Ticket holders have access to the upper level seats in the main grandstand. From this vantage point, there are superb views of all the racing action. Reserved Enclosure ticket holders also have access to the parade ring, and most other areas of the racecourse.
If any are available on a particular race day, for the payment of a supplement, reserved ticket holders can purchase Top Level race seats.
Located on the second floor of the reserved enclosure grandstand, the Silk Glider Restaurant offers a fine dining experience for up to 400 race goers. The restaurant offers partial views of the parade ring, and tables can be booked for the full days racing. Due to the popularity of this facility, advance booking is essential.
Enjoying a bistro style atmosphere, Fillies café bar includes a large patio area overlooking the parade ring, and an outside bar facility, which is open on summer race days. Also overlooking the parade ring, Fillies Restaurant can offer forty seats for the full day of racing. These limited dining places are in great demand, and must be booked in advance.
Located near the Silk Glider Restaurant, the Jodami Var offers reserved ticket holders a full selection of beers wines and spirits.
along with a selection of fast food outlets, a self service restaurant is also available in the Paddock Food Hall.
Grandstand Ticket.
Ticket holders have access to the lower seating and terraces in the main grandstand. There is also access to the parade ring and the Tote Hall.
The Tote Hall combines tote betting facilities with access to the main betting ring. This building also contains a self service restaurant, and the fully stocked Tetrarch Bar.
Grandstand ticket holders also have access to Madigans Bar.

TRANSPORT LINKS.
By Road:
From Dublin city centre, take the N11 southbound heading towards Wexford. At the Whites Cross junction, turn right on to the R113 Leopardstown Road. The racecourse is located around a kilometre down this road on the left hand side.
Alternatively, if coming from Wexford or Wicklow on the M11, pick up the M50, and leave at Carrickmines, junction 15. The racecourse is signposted from this point.
Traffic from north of Dublin should head for the M50, and then leave at junction 15.
Leopardstown provides free car parking for up to six thousand cars. However, on festival days, early arrival is advisable.
By Rail:
The Dublin light railway service, which is known as Luas, picks up passengers in the city centre at Saint Stephens Green, and drops off at Sandyford, which is connected to the racecourse by a courtesy shuttle bus. For the fitter race goer, Sandyford is around a kilometre walk from the racecourse entrances.
The nearest Dart station is Blackrock, which is a short taxi ride from the racecourse.
By Bus:
On every race day, Bus Eireann operate a special race goer service from Busarus in the city centre, and drop passengers off just outside the racecourse.
The service departs one and a half hours before the first race. The return journey commences half an hour after the last race.

By Air:
Dublin international airport is around nine kilometres from the racecourse.
Air Coach operate a regular coach service from the airport to Burton Hall Road, which is adjacent to the racecourse entrances.
