HEXHAM RACECOURSE.

Introduction:
Hexham is Northumberlands only surviving racecourse. The current site is situated on Yarridge Heights, and overlooks the historic market town, which James the first nominated as, the Heart of old England.
Horse racing first took place in the Hexham area around 1720. The first venue was Tyne Green, and it was 1793 before Yarridge Heights saw its first racing action.
However, for various reasons, by 1880, racing at Hexham had ceased. It took the intervention of Charles William Chipchase Henderson to revive the fortunes of Hexham racecourse. At a meeting of the local gentry, he was given the sole responsibility of re establishing the course, a task at which he excelled. Between 1890 and 1900, he financed the building of the racecourse, and in 1907, to secure the future of racing at Hexham, he actually bought the land off the Bywell Estate. Thereafter, his family have maintained a passion for horse racing at Hexham, and they are still represented in the modern racecourse company.
Over the last ten years, the racecourse has received much investment, including the completion of the new Ramshaw Grandstand in 1998.
The course now stages around fourteen days of racing each year, and is a very popular venue for northern race goers.

Track facts:

Hexham only stages national hunt racing.
The course is run left handed around a circuit approximately one mile and four furlongs in circumference. It has severe undulations, including a descent on the home straight, and a climb over the remainder of the course.
The main steeplechase circuit has ten fences laid out in the following circuit pattern: a plain fence, first open ditch, four plain fences, the second open ditch, two more plain fences, and the water jump in front of the grandstand. On the final circuit, the water jump is bypassed. Instead, runners take a right hand spur, which is nearer to the grandstand, and contains a final plain fence and a one furlong run in.
The hurdles course has six obstacles, and runs around the outside of the steeplechase course. The course has one narrower section, where it bypasses the final steeplechase jump, and there is only one hurdle on the home straight.
Winners at Hexham always have to exhibit stamina, and this is particularly true when the going becomes soft to heavy. It is nearly impossible for a front runner to dominate, and statistics indicate ninety per cent of winners come from behind in the home straight.
Enclosures and hospitality:

The listings below do not include the facilities available to Annual Members, Owners and Trainers, and Corporate Guests. These can be obtained by contacting the racecourse.

The relatively new Ramshaw Grandstand provides the best views of all the racing action. Immediately in front of the grandstand, there is a patio and members lawn which overlooks the parade ring, winners enclosure, the home straight, and the winning post.

On the first floor of the grandstand, carvery and bar facilities are located in the Curlew Room and Bar, with drink and snacks also being available in the Chase Bar on the ground floor.
Tattersalls Ticket.
A small Tattersalls grandstand provides views of the run in and winning post. Ticket holders also have access to the parade ring and winners enclosure.

The current en suite guest rooms are equipped with comfortable beds, remote controlled television, internet access, and the standard amenities you expect in a quality hotel, including room service. From October of 2008, the hotel’s facilities will be complimented by the building of 16 new comtemporary and spacious dbedrooms. This new extension is to be built on stilts, and will utilise the space at the rear of the hotel currently occupied by the hotel’s ground floor car park. Because of the location of the extension, disruption to the existing hotel will be minimal.
Diner’s in the hotel’s Park Restaurant could be forgiven for thinking they are in the countryside, for the view from the restaurant windows is of the historic gardens surrounding Hexham Abbey. The country theme is continued in the restaurant’s fine cuisine, with much of the menu using produce obtained from local Northumbrian farms and suppliers. The hotel’s bar and lounge both offer a light bite menu, and they also form the ideal venues to relax and chat.
