Introduction:

Wexford racecourse is situated in the sunny south east of Ireland, and if you don't believe us, the latest Irish meteorological office statistics show Wexford receives a daily average of 4.48 hours of daily sunshine, compared with 3.75 daily hours in the remainder of Ireland. This may explain why the crowds of race goers at the Wexford races have a happy and friendly demeanour.

The beginnings of horse racing in the Wexford area can be traced back to race meetings which were staged on reclaimed bog, but although these fixtures enjoyed popular support when they first began during the eighteen seventies, by 1902 support had dwindled, and the races were abandoned.

Nearly fifty years later, in front of an estimated crowd of seventeen thousand race goers, Wexford's Bettyville racecourse staged its first meeting on Monday 15 October 1951. The new course soon established itself as am important racing venue, and it has  continued to be popular ever since.

The course stages around eleven days of racing. This includes, a weekend fixture in late October, and six separate meetings staged on Fridays. The races often attract large fields, plus leading jockeys from both codes.

Track facts:

Wexford stages a mixture of flat and national hunt racing.

The course has a rectangular shape, and runners run left handed over a slightly undulating circuit, which measures one mile two furlongs in circumference.
