Introduction:

Situated Forty eight kilometres from Dublin, Navan racecourse is actually located at Proudstown, and is around three kilometres outside the conurbation of Navan in County Meath.

First opened in 1920, Navan racecourse has undergone a major redevelopment programme over the last decade, and the course is now amongst the most modern in Ireland.

Racing at Punchestown

In 2011, the course will host around sixteen days of top quality racing. During the winter months, the national hunt fixture list contains many premier races, such as the Tara Hurdle, Boyne Hurdle, Fortria Chase, Lismullen Hurdle, the Barry and Sandra Kelly Memorial Novice Hurdle, and Navan's most prestigious national hunt race - the Troytown Chase. While in May, June and September, the high calibre flat meetings include the staging of the Listed Salsabil Fillies Stakes, and the Vintage Crop Stakes.

Particularly at the national hunt fixtures, the high quality races staged at Navan are sufficiently attractive to persuade major owners and trainers to enter their top echelon horses, and each year Navan race-goers get to see the horse and jockey combinations who later go on to major race victories at the Cheltenham, Fairyhouse, Aintree and Punchestown Festivals.

Track facts:

Navan stages both flat and national hunt racing.

The three courses are all run left handed on an oval circuit measuring around one mile four furlongs in circumference. The home straight section is three and a half furlongs in length, and there is an uphill climb from the two furlong pole to the winning post.

Punchestown Racecourse

The flat course has a chute start which joins on to the run in, and this enables the staging of five furlong straight sprint races.

The hurdles course runs around the inside of the steeplechase course. It has seven hurdles on each circuit, but due to the layout of the obstacles, in 2 mile races, runners have to face the unusually tough test of ten flights of hurdles.

There are also hurdle races over; 2 miles 2 furlongs, 2 miles 4 furlongs, 2 miles 5 furlongs, 2 miles 6 furlongs, and 3 miles.

The steeplechase course has nine fences, with steeplechase races being run over 2 miles, 2 miles 1 furlong, 2 miles 4 furlongs, 2 miles 5 furlongs, 2 miles 6 furlongs, and 3 miles.
