Point-to-pointing moves to West Sussex this Saturday (March 13th) with the fixture at Parham having attracted a healthy entry from far and wide.
Simon Tindall’s trainer Nick Pearce is resting his team this weekend, but locals will face another challenge in the form of four horses from John Dufosee’s West Country yard.
Marcus Gorman, successful with The Tailor Carey last weekend, has the 11-year-old lined up for the Confined and Cotton Bay will tackle the Members. Merry Vic’s run in the Open depends on suitable (softish) ground, while Cape Stormer heads for the Veteran/Novice race but will need the run.
Philip Hall has Highland Chief in the Men’s Open and Tommy Thunder makes his first appearance for the yard in the Restricted. Owner-trainer Rick Gurney will probably follow rider Philip York to Kingston Blount with his promising maiden Rio Novo, but likely runners for this race include Badgers Cove and Grumpy Bee (both Rose Grissell) and either Hitzfromtheblitz (good or softer) or Tartan Flyer from Suzy Bull’s yard. Her husband, reigning men’s champion Peter, has Master T (good or firmer) or Honourable Spider (good or softer) in the Veteran/Novice race and Laguna Beach in the Restricted as well as Durante.
Rose Grissell will be looking for soft ground for Myson in either the Veteran/Novice race or the Ladies’ Open and Delgany Gale is aimed at the Club race. Beluga, from the same yard, may run at Sandown on Friday.
Supporters’ Club chairman Nick Bowman is running Our Samson in the Restricted with Will Hickman riding.
The provisional going is officially good, and with Parham’s light sandy soil and the prevailing weather the expectation is that there will be perfect racing ground. Admission is £25 per car and occupants (£10 discount for single occupancy) and £5 for pedestrians. The organisers have arranged for a wide selection of trade and catering stands, plus the usual funfair. Pony racing (12.30pm) precedes the main programme, with the first adult race starting at 1.45pm.
Parham is one mile west of Storrington on the A283 (code for satnavs is RH20 2ER) and further information is available on www.pointingse.com
Upcoming Meetings:
Gold Heart can complete a Larkhill hat-trick in the New Forest Mixed Open on Sunday. Caroline Holliday’s grey has impressed in two Military races at the Wiltshire venue this season and has all the credentials to make the step up to Open class. Opposition includes Gold Medallist, a good runner-up to in-form Theatre Diva here two weeks ago, the Waley-Cohens’ prolific Irilut, and Olival, who beat Dick Baimbridge’s subsequent Garnons winner Skyhawk at Cottenham. Charles Whittaker’s unchallenged Chaddesley winner Pertinent and course specialist Trade Off, who is suited by fast conditions, look the main dangers, but Gold Heart is fancied to make it three out of three.
Whittaker’s Pertinent and stable companion Scrappie are leading candidates for a competitive looking 22-entry Novice Riders’ race. Grimthorpe Cup winner Network Oscar, Detling runner-up New Team and Marks Tey winner Victree are interesting. Rustic John would be a popular winner for Audrey Manners, but Up There gave former Hennessy Gold Cup favourite Island Flyer a fright at Chaddesley and can go one better, with the Whittaker runner fancied for the forecast.
Scrappie will get the vote for the Confined race if connections take that option. South Dorset winner Gunner Be Quick, Mrs O’Connell and course winner Long Courrier may be sporting alternatives.
Stable companions Ned The Post and Pendoun have chances in the 17-entry Restricted race. Gowna’s Hope, who was upsides winner Maglinn River when falling at the last here in January, may renew rivalry. The three suggestions are course winner Spiders Nephew, Wadebridge winner The Boss, and Timall, who put up a fine display when runner-up to Cousin John here three weeks ago.
Two maiden contests complete the card. Vintage Class was collared close home at the Army meeting and can make amends in the 3m contest. Back Is Back may be suited by the drop in trip in the 2m 4f contest.
Two pony races, qualifiers for the Wessex Final at Larkhill on 30 May, will be staged before racing, at 11.00am.
The course is found just NW of Amesbury on Salisbury Plain, easily reached off the A303 or A345. First race 12.30 pm. Admission is £20 per car including all occupants; £15 car and driver only.
News:
Owners of runners at the Tweseldown meeting on Sunday 11 April will not be charged an entry fee.
Steven Astaire, Chairman of the Tweseldown Club made this decision following the unfortunate late abandonment of last Sunday’s fixture.
“We have apologised for the lack of clarity last Sunday which resulted in inconvenience to some trainers and owners, and as a gesture we will not be debiting the account for any owner whose horse runs on 11 April.
Improvements at Hackwod Park .
Trainers, riders and owners walked the Hackwood circuit on Monday 8 March evening to inspect the changes made to the Hampshire course over the winter.
Unanimous approval was expressed at the re-alignment of both bends while the extra width added to two of the seven beautifully presented fences was a vote winner.
Said Alresford trainer Victoria Collins,
“It is plain to see that both the turn at the bottom and the sharper top bend are going to ride better than they have in the past.” Collins went on to express satisfaction with the underfoot conditions.
“It is good level ground that has obviously been well prepared – I will certainly have runners at the three meetings this spring’.”
Penny Lownds, training at Morestead, walked round with partner Michael ‘Curly’ Holdforth who rides most of her runners.
“It is obvious a lot of work has gone into Hackwood Park during the closed season, Apart from the work on the two turns, widening the fence after the top bend is a great improvement. It used to take horses by surprise because it was partially obscured by a tree but now it is in full view as you swing off the turn. At the bottom end of the course where the two and a half mile races will start, the first fence has been widened which will suit the younger horses running in those races.”
Clerk of the course Bill Wellings has masterminded the improvements on the track, and it has to be said, the course has assumed a very professional profile since he took over three years ago. Commenting, Bill said:
“I think jockeys – and horses – will appreciate the more inviting open ditch. We have covered the take-off rail in heavy orange plastic so that it looks like the ditches on NH courses. All we need now is warm weather and some rain to encourage the growth of grass.”
Among the group of 30 course walkers were riders Simon Cobden, Emily Harbour and Clare Wills as well as Holdforth and they all voiced approval.

The Holderness Hunt Point-to-Point will be held at Dalton Park on Sunday 14th March 2010. The first race is due to be run at 1.30 pm and there are 107 entries for the 7 race card, with the biggest field being the confined race with 20 entries. The last race, the Open Maiden race has been split at entry stage.
There are 14 entries in the Hunt race and it looks like it could be one of the most competitive renewals of this race for some time. Chris Cundall and Major Shark will be hoping to retain their title after winning this race last year, however recent Maiden winner Boxbury could put up a very good show and The Real Tom Eoin has been putting in good performances this season. The course is ideal for stayers and this should suit Ask Bobby down to the ground.
Gunner Jack will take all the beating in the Confined race after his easy win in the hunt race at Duncombe Park.
Poppy Day has been running very well in Ladies Races and it would be great to see her take on Lutin Du Moulin who has also won twice this season with Anna Dawson in the plate. Wilfie Wild’s stamina will be well suited by this course and it would fantastic to see him in the frame.
The postcode for satellite navigation is HU17 7PW and admission is £35 per car for the reserved car park, £25 per car for the non-reserved car park and single occupancy is £10 per car and £5 on foot.
