TIVYSIDE POINT TO POINT

Sunday 11 March

Being held in its tenth year at the Boncath course of Cilwendeg, an 11am start gives race goers the added treat of three pony races being held before the 12 o’clock main meeting, which in itself is a seven race card.

Many of the 87 entries for the meeting are making their 2nd visit of the season to the track including Dai Rees’ Major Decision. His partnership with novice rider Wayne Maskill proved successful when taking the Confined race last time out and the opening Hunt Members race looks a great opportunity for the duo to score again.

Direct Line could make up for a jumping error that cost him dear last time, to take the feature race of the day the  Connolly’s Red Mills Intermediate, but if Superman De La Rue and Udeman take their place in the line up he will certainly be put to the test.

Course builder and Clerk of the course Brian Llewellyn is very happy with the way the track is looking and is predicting good to soft ground. Secretary Liz Rooney is looking forward to welcoming to the track all of the first time visitors that are entered in the Ladies Open, with 16 entries all closely rated by the Racing Post Weekender it promises to be competitive affair.

Children under 16 are admitted for free to the meeting when accompanied by an adult, with caterers and refreshments available on course along with bookmakers, those making their first trip to the course can find it along the B4332 with SA37 0EW needed in the Sat Nav.

Entrance fees are the same for all West Wales meetings: £10 Car & Driver, £5 per adult

RED LETTER DAY FOR IOAN

Ioan Thomas realised a dream on Saturday at the Vale of Clettwr Hunt Point to Point, making his first ever ride a winning one aboard Wyn Morris's Backstreet Lad
in the Hunt Members race. Past experience as whipper-in for the ‘Clettwr’ the past eight years stood him in good stead to win by a distance from Treasury Counsel and Isobel Thompsett.

An enthusiastic crowd welcomed him in, pleased to be at the races, appreciating the Vale of Clettwr Committee’s efforts to stage racing after re-seeded ground at the original course; Erw Lon became unfit for racing after heavy rain, re-directing the meeting to Lydstep.

The Cheltenham Foxhunters is on the agenda for five lengths winner of the ‘Men’s Open’ race, Dead or Alive, trained by Abbi Vaughan and ridden by Llangeinor jockey Evan David. Evan went on to ride a double at the meeting, the second for trainer Sam Butler in the ‘Confined Race’ aboard Liberty Rock. The duo had to fight hard to the line to win by a length, as Jodie Hughes was throwing everything she could at runner up Moonlight Music.

Naughty by Nature is aptly named because you can never be sure what kind of mood he’s in. A previous run this season down in Devon yielded a poor run which baffled connections but today saw his other side, always racing prominently and jumping well under Jodie Hughes the partnership went on over the final circuit to win the ‘Ladies Open’ race by five lengths from the staying on Kisha King, ridden by Anna Metekohy, having her first Point to Point ride.

Fourteen went to post in the ‘Restricted’ race, with course specialist and 6-4 joint favourite Pathian Prince, notching up his third career win under a supremely confident ride from John Mathias. The South Pembrokeshire qualified horse looked very fit in the paddock and will be hard to beat back over the course when returning on Easter Monday.

John De Lisle Wells took time out from stewarding at the meeting to change into the role of owner and had great pleasure in welcoming back both his runners as winners, Lady Darcy, trained by Julie Houldey, De Lisle Well bought as a foal for £800 from Doncaster sales and proved a classy winner of the ‘Mares Maiden’. A qualifier for the PPA & PPORA Maiden Mares series, connections are now keen to peruse the series, ridden by Dave Mansell, owner and rider were back in the winners enclosure two races later with odds on favourite, Lord Brownlow for the ‘Horses and Geldings Maiden Div. 2’, this time trained by Robert Luke down in Clarbeston Road and joint owned by De Lisle Well’s lifelong friend David Morgan.

Bloodstock agent Grant Lewis has made another successful Irish purchase this time for ‘The Big Dreamers Partnership’ in the shape of Bob’s Law. Trained for the syndicate by Robert Scrine and ridden by Paul Tolman in Div.1 of the ‘Horses and Geldings Maiden’, the Carmarthenshire qualified horse looks sure to be back in the winners enclose again this season after a 1 ½ length victory over Cilrhiwron and Bradley Gibbs.

HISTORY MADE AT TIVYSIDE MEETING

Making its way back onto the Lewis’ family sideboard for the sixth time since its inauguration is the winner’s trophy for the Tivyside Hunt Members race. Trained by Bridget Lewis and owned by father in law, past Hunt Master Dewi Lewis, odds on favourite Balearic Star came home a five length winner from Bizarre Native in the opening race of the day.

Ridden by South Pembrokeshire jockey John Mathias, it proved a day to go down in history as Mathias went on to ride another five winners, the next three, his father Phillip’s, Lydstep Hills (Confined Race), Eric Clough’s Pathian Prince (Intermediate Race) & David Llewellyn’s Rosies Peacock (Men’s Open Race) also all hail from South Pembrokeshire, with the latter two now having the Dunraven Windows Novice Hunter Chase at Chepstow on April 15th    as a potential target.  When asked what his future plans were for Lydstep Hills, Mathias senior said “he was unsure about his horse, but he knew that his lay down at local watering hole, the Cresswell Quay about 9pm!!”

Chestnut Annie and Isobel Thompsett provided a change of face to the winners enclosure when taking the only race Mathias could not ride in, the AGA Ladies Open, Annie, easily accounting for sole rival Chandlers Cross ridden by Jodie Hughes, enjoyed the good ground at the Cilwendeg course.

Thirteen runners went to post in the Restricted Race but it was Mathias and previous Brecon Maiden winner Saint Peray, owned by Clarbeston Road trainer Dai Rees, who came away five lengths to the good from Paul Tolman and the Rob Scrine trained On Oath.  Scrine teamed up with Nick Williams in the next race, the Maiden Division one, gaining compensation with 9 year old gelding Atmywitsend.

Mathias ended the day as he has started in Division two of the Maiden Race aboard a horse he trains himself, the Club Preseli owned Banagher. Coming home to a great reception from the crowd, creating history in winning his sixth race of the day, a feat never achieved before by a welsh jockey.
