The Quantock Staghounds at Cothelstone

Saturday 17 March 2012

Southwestern and stable companion Special Account stand out in the Quantock Staghounds Mens Open at Cothelstone, where a bumper 161 horses have been entered for the scheduled seven races. The former was surprisingly beaten in deteriorating conditions at Ston Easton, but had earlier shown himself as good as ever with two early season wins. Punters burnt their fingers when Special Account fell at the first at Buckfastleigh, but regained some of the losses with the horse’s easy Great Trethew Confined win a week later. Dual 2012 winner Dinnie O, the consistent In Media Res and Man From Highworth, who should be suited to Cothelstone, are three to consider, but former Scottish Champion Hurdle winner Border Castle has looked past his best in two outings to date. Camilla Scott’s selected runner from Southwestern and Special Account can lead home Dinnie O.

Angela Rucker, winner of two of the last four runnings of the Quantock Staghounds Ladies Open, holds the key to this year’s contest. The Worcestershire rider has entered Qozak, the winner of six races at nearby Taunton racecourse, and Nikos Extra, a £30,000 purchase out of Alan King’s yard at Doncaster in August. Angela’s niece, Alex Dunn, has moved to the Taunton area recently and her family’s easy Milborne St Andrew winner Double Mead is the obvious danger. Others to consider include Quedillac, a dual winner before failing to get to grips with Swift Counsel at Charlton Horethorne, the consistent Foynes Island and Great Tusker, although this is a big step-up from Maiden class. Overlut put up a superb front running performance here a few years ago and will be a threat if at his best.

Cothelstone standing dish Croix De Guerre, who interrupted the Rucker sequence with two wins in the Ladies race, can add the Confined race trophy to his win portfolio.  Course winners Martin Pitchwood and Mighty Marine, and Umberleigh winner Three Half Crowns should be considered, but the fascinating entry is Wizard Of Edge, the winner of nine races under Rules, including four at Wincanton and two at Taunton.

Former top chaser Idle Talk is among the eight entries for the opening Hunt race and will get the vote if facing the starter. Wadebridge hero Carlos Gardel and course winner Stealing Moments will be supported, but Little Cornham impressed when making a winning debut at Ston Easton and can provide the strongest challenge.

There are 42 entries for a difficult looking Restricted. Bishops Court winner Devon Mead is the suggestion. Little Cornham and Great Tusker may be the alternatives if taking this option.

Two Maiden races complete the card. Polo Springs ran well at Kingston St Mary and is a sporting selection for the 2m 4f event. Bobby Choice has been runner-up on three occasions and can finally get his head in front in the 3m contest.

The course lies north of Taunton off the A358, 3 miles NE of Bishops Lydeard (TA4 3DT).  First race: 12.30pm.  Admission: £20 per car and all occupants; £10 single occupancy; £5 pedestrians.

The Combined Services at Larkhill – 18 March 2012

Divine Intavention can continue his rise through the pointing hierarchy by winning the Coronation Gold Cup Men’s Open, one of the season’s four national Classic races, at the Combined Services meeting at Larkhill this Mothering Sunday.
Runner-up to Gone To Lunch in the 2011 contest, Divine Intavention is in top form and has already won four races this season (two points plus Taunton and Ludlow Hunter Chases). The 10 entries include Who Else Knew and Righteous Glory, who were first and second here last weekend, Jayne’s Crusader, who came back to his best to retain the Dick and Sue Woodhouse Memorial Hunter Chase, and She Is A Cracker, who has won two of her three 2011/12 outings. Offshore Account has won twice this season, including an easy defeat of Jayne’s Crusader last time out, but Divine Intavention is proving one of the stars of the season and is a confident selection.

Hincheslea Moor won a competitive Restricted here in January and can follow up in the Novice Riders’ race. Battle Bridge has won twice at Tweseldown but Black Forest Lodge and Treborough Hill winner Delta Borget looks the biggest threat under Leanda Tickle, who heads the season’s Lady Novice Riders table.

There are 10 entries in each of the Maiden contests. Parstara, Queens Bower and Royale Bruere are the three for the Mares race. Ashton Magic can regain Charlton Horethorne losses in the Horses and Geldings event.

Or Bleu, runner-up in the Countryside Alliance (Wessex) Ladies Open, can go one better in the Conditions contest. Armoury House is the suggestion for the Ladies Open. Simply Game and Manton can fight out the Restricted.

Plus, to toast Mothering Sunday, the most spectacular lady’s hat has a chance of winning a bottle of pink champagne for its owner!

First race: 1.00pm. Admission is £15 per car and driver; £5 each additional adult, £5 pedestrians, under 16s free.  The course is found just NW of Amesbury on Salisbury Plain, reached via the A303, A360 or A345.  NB: For this meeting the only entrance to the course is off the B3086 (‘The Packway’) on the east side of Larkhill Garrison (SP4 8QR).

Point-to-Point - Barbury Castle - Sunday 13 February 2011.

Sam Waley-Cohen, who rode Long Run to victory in the prestigious KING george VI Chase at Kempton Park last month was seen to advantage at Barbury Castle on Sunday taking the two and a half mile Maiden race on the aptly named Winning Habit.

Sam, who silenced critics of his amateur status when beating champion jockey AP McCoy at Kempton, demonstrated professional judgement at Barbury easing his mount into contention with six fences to jump and riding a polished finish to beat Cavite Zeta and Pippin Fort comfortably.

Another promising amateur, 16 year old William Twiston-Davies, son of trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies, was faultless in making all the running on his father's Nauton Brook in the opening novice riders event.

More than 100 runners contested the seven races on an afternoon spoiled by constant rain.  Although there were several 'unseated riders', fallers were few with jockeys nursing their horses to get home in the testing ground.

The Combined Services at Larkhill – 19 February 2011

Gone To Lunch, who narrowly survived a near-fatal respiratory illness last summer, won a thrilling Coronation Gold Cup at Larkhill on Saturday. Sam Waley-Cohen set a fast pace on Otage De Brion, before being passed by the Mark Wall-partnered  Divine Intavention, who had been backed from 16/1 to 3/1, and Gone To Lunch on the final climb. The pair had the race between them until Gone To Lunch finally battled his way to the front approaching the last. A first Coronation Cup winner for jockey Neil Harris, trainer Camilla Scott and owner Gary Lever after several near-misses, Gone To Lunch now heads to Cheltenham for the Christie’s Foxhunter on 18 March.
Description, who overturned favourite Theatre Diva at Larkhill’s January meeting, confirmed the placings in the Ladies Open.  Jo Buck looked to have made the decisive move when forcing Theatre Diva through on the inside entering the straight, but Description and Camilla Ewart easily reasserted after the two horses had jumped the last upsides.
Two other horses followed up their January course successes. Marianne Barber’s Dualla Lord cruised home in the Novice Riders’ race after Harry Derham did well to survive the grey’s last fence blunder. Mr Melodious impressed as he and Johnny England led over the last five fences from favourite Bold Chief, who could never quite get on terms in the Restricted. “All he does is gallop and we just hoped that he would have the class to lay up with the others”, admitted Dominique Green, representing her partner, trainer Richard Bevis, who was on duty at Wincanton. Connections have no specific plans, but the five-year-old is definitely one for the notebook.
Country Gentleman’s Association chief executive William Harrison-Allan was also at Wincanton for his company’s sponsored race, so he missed seeing his Sherminator get off the mark under Will White in the Maiden. The Cheltenham purchase – “bought on the same day at Cheltenham in January 2008 as [Cheltenham Hunter Chase winner] Shooters Wood”, said trainer Camilla Baylis – Sherminator seemed to relish the longer trip after disappointing over 2 miles under Rules.
Twenty-two-year-old former Royal Marine Kevin Jones, who rode his first winner on Alldunnandusted in a Stratford hurdle in May for his boss Seamus Mullins, doubled his tally on Club Members winner May Be Possible. Owned and trained by Richard and Gill Bryan, May Be Possible put in a fine round of jumping and still held the advantage when closest pursuer Ungaro (Heather Kemp) fell at the last.
Flying Phento was a very comfortable winner of Mares’ Maiden under Josh Guerriero. The nine-year-old is the fourth winner bred by Kentisbeare owner Pam Pengelly out of 10-race winner Fly The Wind following Lady Wurzel, Big Dave’s Legend and Dennis The Legend, the winner of Stratford’s 2009 John Corbet Cup.
L/Bdr Katie Stock, 24, opened her account on Reflection in the closing King’s Troop RHA Club Members race. Capt Max Chenery looked in control on 2010 winner Blackadder, but had no answer when Reflection sprinted past the long-time leader after the second last.

The Countryside Alliance Club (Wessex) at Badbury Rings
Sunday 27 February 2011

Sam Allwood rode the 50th winner of his career – 45 in points, five under rules – on Karshaan in the opener at Badbury Rings on Sunday. Always prominent, the eight-year-old led at the third last and impressively quickened 12 lengths clear of his 10 rivals. “It was a bit sticky when he finished third at Chipley Park, but he’s jumped better today on the better ground”, felt Bradford Peverell’s Fiona Shaw, whose husband Peter trains the gelding for his greyhound racing loving syndicate of owners “The Gone To The Dogs Partnership”.
Jayne’s Crusader, trained by Sally Alner for Percy and Anne Tory and Diana Dampney, was a popular winner of the Men’s Open. Michael Miller made his move at the third last and soon had the race in safekeeping, although the eight-year-old did get in close to the final fence.
Emily MacMahon was in double form on Miss Midnight (Ladies Open) and Citizens Arrest (Restricted). The former led from the cross fence and held Chloe Boxall’s persistent challenge on Armoury House. “That’s twice Emily has ridden Miss Midnight and twice they’ve won”, revealed Thornicombe handler Mary Tory, who trains the mare for John and Greer Norman. Emily adopted similar tactics on Citizens Arrest, who is trained by Tim Billington for his stepson Nolan Byrne. Tim has four pointers in training but is more familiar to racegoers as head of the Pangfield Partners – their Hughie Morrison-trained Cill Rialaig won the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot last summer.
The Open Maiden was divided at scale. Polly Gundry reached the 299 career point-to-point winner mark on Classical Rocker in Division 1, which finished in a torrential hailstorm. “She made big mistakes at the fourth and third last and was headed on the run-in, but she’s brave”, said the eight-time Champion. Merry Terry and Robbie Henderson were impressive and popular winners of Division 2 for Sherborne owner-trainers Richard and Ruth Dimond, who lost their prolific Joe Lively at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day. “Merry Terry has strengthened enormously and must have improved 2 stone since last season”, beamed the rider, who was eager to praise his partner.
Barneys Mate and his jockey Harry Derham both reached the three-winner mark for the season with a facile Novice Riders race success, and the pair can run up an extended sequence in similar contests throughout the season.

Rustic John landed his third Larkhill success, but his first for Westonbirt retired farmer John Hatherell and Chippenham trainer Mike Hawker, in the New Forest Mixed Open on Saturday. Mark Wall set a good gallop and the 11-year-old was always in command of his five rivals who could never quite get on terms. “I bought him at the Johnny Manners Dispersal Sale in June”, said John, adding his first point-to-point success to a previous winner under Rules. “I rode my first winner here in this race 30 years ago”, added Mike, whose other pointer, Sheknowsyouknow, had won the Duke of Beaufort’s Hunt race a fortnight earlier.
Mike’s nephew, Robert Hawker, was in the winner’s enclosure with Lilac Wine, who forged seven lengths clear after the second last in the Mares’ Maiden. “We bought her privately out of Dominic French Davis’ yard”, explained Calne owner-trainers Gerald and Alex Burton, whose Ruud Revenge won at Chaddesley Corbett in February. “It’s third time lucky for Lilac Wine here at Larkhill, and although our son, Sam, was last in the 138cm Pony race earlier today, we’ve taken the winner She’s Wicked on loan, so Sam’s got something to look forward to as well”.
Karshaan and Sam Allwood justified 2/7 favouritism to make it two out of two this season in the Confined. “We were in two minds whether to run, but we would like to go hunter chasing and you won’t find a fairer test than this”, said Larkhill fence builder Andy Ross, who heads Karshaan’s syndicate of owners.
Grant Cann introduced a nice prospect when I’m In Charge (Amanda Bush) sauntered home in the 2m 4f Maiden. “I bought him at the Goffs June 2010 Land Rover Sale, but he failed to sell at Cheltenham’s NH Breeze Up Sales in December. We’ll probably aim him at a bumper now”, summed up Grant.
Philip Prince, who completed the course on Distant Thunder in the previous day’s Cheltenham Christie’s Foxhunter, brought Preacher Boy to collar 1/3F Barneys Mate (Harry Derham) 25 yards from the line in the Novice Riders’ race. “Philip rode his first point-to-point winner in this race last year on Spanchil Hill”, recalled Philip’s father, Richard Prince. “We had a brilliant day at Cheltenham yesterday and I hope we can go back one day with a real chance”.
Lutteur Bleu confirmed his liking for Larkhill when making all in the Restricted under Robbie Henderson. “Lutteur Bleu loves Larkhill, loves firm ground and he’ll be back for the South & West Wilts Hunt race he won last season”, confirmed Sutton Montis trainer Angela Davis, mother of Lutteur Bleu’s 19-year-old owner Charlotte Davis.

Wilton at Badbury Rings Saturday 26 March 2011.

Wessex Area stalwarts Touch Of Flame and Trade Off fought out an exciting finish to the Wilton Men’s Open at Badbury Rings on Saturday. Michael Miller set sail for home two out on the winner, but Trade Off fought back and might have prevailed in another 50 yards. “Touch Of Flame loves fast ground and Michael knows him so well”, said trainer Keith Cumings, keen to praise his horse and rider. The runner-up, who is hunted by Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey Daryl Jacob, also received high praise from connections. “He’s a legend”, said jockey Sam Allwood on dismounting. “He’s my Kauto Star”, added joint owner Anne Tory.
Sam Allwood had earlier gone one better on Tork To Me, who put in a fine round of jumping in the Restricted. Trained by Child Okeford permit holder Richenda Ford, Tork To Me relished the fast ground and is a candidate for summer hurdling under National Hunt Rules.
Salisbury jockey Matt Hampton, who works for Philip Hobbs, kept up his good run on Hunt race winner Tea Caddy. Trained by Lucy Snowden at Ebbesbourne Wake, Tea Caddy was a first-ever winner and achieved a longstanding ambition for owner/breeder Richard Matthews, a retired merchant from Devizes.
Charlotte (“Charlie”) Brown and George Hiscock rode their second career winners at the meeting. Charlie, assistant to licensed trainer Seamus Mullins, brought Pastek through to collar Bringbackthebiff (Doug White) in the PPORA Club Members race. George, 19, who rides out for Charlotte Tizzard, sent out his first winner from his Plush yard when The Jolly Hare landed the Maiden contest.
Chloe Boxall rode her first winner for Isle of Wight owner Anna Reed and Hampshire trainer David Buckett when Armoury House took the Ladies’ Open. Chloe looked set for a battle royal with Polly Gundry on Dr Cerullo until the latter blundered and ejected the eight-time Champion at the third last.

Mendip Farmers at Ston Easton Sunday 27 March 2011.

Ed Kenney-Herbert, 27, rode his first winner for seven years on Duxy Hill Lady in the Men’s Open at Ston Easton. Duxy Hill Lady and Humbel Origins (Nick Williams) had the race between them throughout the final circuit before Kim Tripp and Francis Read’s nine-year-old mare forged clear from three out. “It’s my first win since Choc at the Army at Larkhill in January 2004, but my third win in four rides at Ston Easton”, said Ed, who works as a project manager installing 22 wind turbines on a Swedish wind farm.
Miss Midnight took her winning sequence to three in the Ladies’ contest. Jenny Carr kept John and Greer Norman’s Miss Midnight close to the pace before forging clear of long-time leader Triggernometry (Charlotte Tizzard) in the straight. “We intended to run her in a Newton Abbot Hunter chase, but she banged a fetlock so we came here”, admitted Thornicombe trainer Mary Tory, who was keen to credit the organisers for their work preparing the course.
Redlynch first-season trainer Hugo Froud made a winning start with the Nick Williams-partnered Rushing Nature, who took the 2m 4f Maiden after Murtaad ejected Tigga Barnes at the last when upsides. “He’s my only pointer, although I’ve several youngsters for next season”, said Hugo, who worked as pupil assistant for two years at Brian Meehan’s Manton yard. Hugo trains Rushing Nature for a 15-strong syndicate of former Bristol University friends organised by Charlie Vaughan-Fowler.
1961 National Champion Rider John Daniell was present to see his namesake cruise home in the Restricted. “The horse is the fifth generation of a family of winners that John has been involved with, so we rang him on the way to tell him to come here”, said winning rider Amanda Bush.
Apprentice farrier Charlie Dando, 19, opened his account – “at about the 80th attempt”, he felt – on Artistic Approach in the 3 mile Maiden. Owned and trained by Charlie’s father David and his sister Lucy, Artistic Approach made all and stormed clear from the final chicane.
Heather Sheppard’s The Slug (Chloe Roddick) got the better of Own Line (Sarah Gould) in a match for the Hunt race.
William Cox took the 138cm Pony Race on his 12-year-old Dipford Moon Walker, and in-form Harry Cobden and Calypso prevailed in a three-way battle up the straight for the 148cm contest.

The Cotley Hunt at Cotley

Sunday 3 April 2011

Seaborough trainer Richard Barber followed up his Saturday Larkhill treble by saddling the winners of six of the seven races at the Cotley meeting on Sunday. He sent 13 horses to the two meetings and won all of the nine races he contested. The feat recalled his six-winner tally at the 1994 South Dorset fixture at Milborne St Andrew and was just one behind his record seven-timer on the Mendip Farmers nine-race card at the old Castle of Comfort course in March 1998.
Barneys Mate (Novice Riders race), Mendip Express (2m 4f Maiden), Dualla Lord (Mixed Open), Bold Chief (Restricted), Glass’n A Half (first 3m Maiden) and Caught Off Guard (second 3m Maiden) provided Richard’s six winners. The former led over the last four fences to take Harry Derham to the four winner mark for the season. Mendip Express prevailed after Pastara (George Hiscock) had fallen at the second last. “I think we’d have won by a furlong, though, if he hadn’t been down on his nose at the fifth last”, felt winning jockey Ryan Mahon. Bought as a three-year-old via the late Tom Costello, Mendip Express recalls his 1990s Dick Baimbridge-trained namesake, who won 38 point-to-points for Malmesbury owner Patsy Willis, all in the hands of six-time National Champion Rider Alison Dare.

Marianne Barber was considering the Christie’s Foxhunter route for Dualla Lord after the grey cruised home in the Mixed Open. Dualla Lord is now unbeaten in his four outings this season “and he hasn’t had to race in any of them”, felt jockey Will Biddick.

Ryan Mahon took the reins on Bold Chief, who is jointly owned by Carol Eyre and meeting starter Bill Dupont. “I offered to stand down for this race, but the Stewards gave me permission to start it”, he said.

Ryan rode his fifth weekend winner on Glass’n A Half, who already looked the winner when the disputing Lightening Jack (Alice Pearn) fell at the second last. Ryan looked booked for another winner with Arosio until the odds-on favourite fell three out, leaving stable companion Caught Off Guard to collect the prize. The win was a first UK success for 24-year-old Irishman Martin Cooney after two previous “firsts” in Irish point-to-points.

Kiama looked certain to win the opening Hunt race for Len and Rose Vickery when the mare blundered badly at the last and unseated Will Biddick. The “no remounting” rule prevented Will from getting back into the plate, leaving the Sue Popham-trained Wee Bertie and Micheal Nolan to jump the last and collect the prize for Yarcombe farmer David Meyrick and Ilminster cider works boss Godfrey Harris. “I can’t celebrate too much as I’m off for a 2-day Trade Fair at Exeter”, smiled Godfrey.

The Seavington Hunt at Littlewindsor – Sunday 10 April 2011

Southwestern put up a magnificent display to win the Seavington Men’s Open on Sunday. Now the winner of his last four races and looking right back to his best, the 12-year-old was in command throughout the final circuit and won by a distance easing down. “He’s certainly buzzing at the moment”, said jockey Neil Harris, who has now won 20 races on the former Horse & Hound Cup winner.

Ask Again was never headed as he took his career tally to 17 in the Ladies’ Open. “He’s jumped well and he’ll go for either the AGA Final at Cheltenham or try to retain Wincanton’s Wessex Champion Hunter now”, thought trainer-rider Sarah West.

Hoo La Baloo opened his pointing account under Harry Derham in the Novice Riders’ race. The 10-year-old jumped well throughout and always looked to have the measure of Distant Thunder (Philip Prince) after market rival Monkerty Tunkerty had blundered and given Exford trainer-rider Jess Westwood no chance of staying in the plate at the 10th.

Hoo La Baloo completed a training double for Wellow handler Chloe Roddick who had piloted Gordon Fox’s Ascot purchase Bury The Hatchet to victory in the opening 2m 4f Maiden. Modern Day Icon looked the winner until an appalling blunder at the last and although Ian Chanin galvanised the five-year-old on the run-in, the pair were still half-a-length adrift at the line.

Josh Newman, 19, who works for Barbury Castle trainer Alan King, opened his account “from about 30 rides” on Hunt race winner Sobre Tresor. The winner is trained by Josh’s aunt Chloe Newman and is owned by his grandmother Ros Newman, who was at Ascot with her Charity Flat Race runner Ducal Daisey.

The Axe Valley Racing Club landed a 1-2 in the Maiden. Gypsy Jack (Martin Cooney) and Shuffles (Robbie Henderson) had the race between them from a long way out and jumped the last together before the former, a previously unraced six-year-old bought at Ascot by Richard Barber for £1,600, prevailed by a head.

Okeford Fitzpaine permit holder Richenda Ford celebrated her birthday by sending out Ball Hopper to win the Restricted under Matt Hampton. A summer jumping campaign is on the cards.

The Tedworth Hunt at Barbury Racecourse

nr Marlborough, Wiltshire – Sunday 10 April 2011

Fossebridge rider Mark Wall reached his career century of point-to-point winners - plus another 10 under Rules - when he took the opening Tedworth Restricted race on Isle Of Skye, trained by Tracey Bailey for her mother, Sarah Sutton,. The grey mare made all the running and held Even Homer Nods, who could never quite get on terms under Dan Collins in the straight. “What a peach of a ride”, said Tracey, whose daughter Pandora rides out Isle Of Skye at home. Mark left immediately after the race to ride a double on Rustic John and Divine Intavention at Andoversford before travelling on to Ascot, where he finished a half-length runner-up on Sovereign King in the closing Hunter Chase. Isle Of Skye’s win also completed a marvellous 72 hours for Tracey after Offshore Account and her brother Nick Sutton had finished third in the Aintree Foxhunter.

Commander Vic and Tom Bishop finished alone to retain the coveted Tedworth Gold Cup. “Gladiatorial won this twice, so it’s the fourth time we’ll have this lovely trophy on the sideboard”, said Tom’s mother, Wincanton owner-trainer Frances Bishop. Tom, who cycled from Rome to London to raise funds in aid of bone cancer research and ran in last year’s Paris Marathon, recently added boxing to his considerable range of sporting interests. “I enjoy sparring and I’m looking forward to my first fight in the summer”, he said.

Property developer Harry Marriott celebrated his first season as Tedworth Joint Point-to-Point Secretary by making all the running on his Rowdy Yeats in the Confined. “I’ll be 50 in August and it’s my second win from five rides after a lifetime’s fun hunting with the Tedworth and the Portman”, he said.

Travellers Lad won the Novice Riders’ race for owner-trainers Richard and Gill Bryan, although Mikado Melody had an unassailable lead when parting company with Nicholas Meek four out. “We would never have caught Mikado Melody, but he’s jumped well and battled on when challenged in the straight”, said winning jockey Kevin Jones, who works for Seamus Mullins. “He’s a nice horse for a novice rider”, added Gill.

James Ridley reached the seven-winner mark on Owston Ferry, who made all to deny Nicholas Meek a compensation win on Warrior Conquest in the 3m Maiden. The winner is trained at Wantage by Neil Thomas for the seven-strong Judge ‘N’ Thomas Partnership.

Kiss Me Twice, jumping superbly for Tom Weston, upset odds-on favourite Viking Johnson (James Ridley) in the 2m 4f Maiden. “Bought as a foal and has benefitted from soft palate and hobday operations 11 weeks ago”, said Tom Lacey, who trains the five-year-old for Marc Jonas.

The Portman at Badbury Rings, nr Wimborne, Dorset
Saturday 16 April 2011

First-season Nyland trainer Stuart Penny achieved his first success when the Dufosee Family’s homebred Stalbridgeswansong took the Portman 3-mile Maiden at Badbury Rings on Saturday. Stuart is campaigning eight pointers from the late John Dufosee’s stables, after being associated with the yard for 11 years. He landed a series of wins for John aboard Hazel Goody’s Frank Byrne in the early 2000s. “If Duf had wanted a winner, this would be the place”, said Teresa Dufosee, whose late husband died in May, aged 66, after a battle against cancer. “Stalbridgeswansong is the last of the line, which included horses like [Arkle’s 1966 Hennessy Gold Cup conqueror] Stalbridge Colonist, that was established by John’s grandfather, Harry Dufosee”. Partnered by Robbie Henderson, Stalbridgeswansong just got the better of a battle with Get In Line, ridden by his owner-trainer, Vicky Heal.

The win completed a double for Robbie after Merry Terry benefitted from first-time cheekpieces in the Restricted. “They seem to have brightened his ideas up”, felt Sherborne owner-trainers Richard and Ruth Dimond.

Michael Miller was also in double form with Mixed Open winner Touch Of Flame and Alfatrix, who walked over in the Hunt Members for Portman Point-to-Point Secretary Jackie Abbott and Peter Gray. The former held on comfortably after disputing for most of the race with runner-up Beadnell Bay (Robbie Henderson). “We don’t give Michael instructions – he knows how to ride Badbury”, smiled Janet Cumings, who added that Touch Of Flame would be back in the hunting field, ridden by her husband, Keith, later in the week.

Pastek took the Intermediate after jumping the last alongside fellow Badbury specialist and market rival Tork To Me (Matt Hampton). A trip to the Cheltenham Hunter Chase evening meeting on 4 May is on the agenda.

Erehwon – “Nowhere” backwards after his sire, Exit To Nowhere – made all and drew further and further clear of his 2m 4f Maiden rivals under Suzy Berry. The win launched a weekend double (completed by Adeus Ayrton 24 hours later at Cothelstone) for Spaxton handler Marie McGuinness, who trains the seven-year-old for owner-breeder Anthony Phipps.

Plush jockey George Hiscock rode his second winner of the campaign when Woodbridge Quest walked over in the Novice Riders’ race.

The Eric Dymott Memorial Trophy for Leading Novice Rider at Badbury Rings this season was awarded to Matt Hampton.

The West Somerset Vale at Cothelstone, nr Taunton

Sunday 17 April 2011

Gaelic Flight benefitted from a change of bit to land the West Somerset Vale Mixed Open at Cothelstone on Sunday. The Camilla Scott 13-year-old led throughout under Neil Harris and easily held Richard Woollacott’s challenge in the last half-mile aboard Johnny’s Way. “He ran out at Treborough Hill and then hung badly left when winning here in March”, said Jeremy Scott, who had stopped to watch the race while bringing Gone To Lunch back from his seventh placed run in the Scottish Grand National at Ayr the previous day. “He’s worn a different Dexter Ring bit today and Neil says that he has run much straighter”. A Hunter Chase outing is on the cards.

Charlotte Tizzard opened her seasonal account on Ali Holland’s “family pet” Stealing Moments in the Restricted. “I thought I’d left a message on Charlotte Budd’s answer phone asking whether James Best or Suzy Berry were available to ride Stealing Moments in the Quantock Staghounds Hunt race here in March”, explained Ali. “”But I’d rung the wrong Charlotte, and when Charlotte Tizzard rang back, I booked her. Stealing Moments was second that day, but Charlotte gave him a great ride and I booked her again for today”.

Micheal Nolan took the outright lead in the National Novices’ table on the Marie McGuinness-trained Adeus Ayrton, who collared long-time leader Grove Melody (Will Biddick) after the last in the 2m 4f maiden. “He cost Harry Findlay £140,000 as a three-year-old but we paid slightly less than that [£800]”, smiled John Sherwin, Mike Roe, Tim Harris, Will Tilley, John Rees and Rupert Snook, the six members of the Senna Loose Move Lively Club.
Fellow Philip Hobbs-employee Matt Hampton kept tabs on Micheal – he is three behind in the standings – on Jacqui and Nick Dawe’s Hunt race winner Rio Laine. “He’s a private purchase from Tom George’s yard, and he’s been hunted hard in the Quantocks”, said Nick.

Bradley Gibbs, who opened his account with an Ystradowen double 24 hours earlier, was back in the winner’s enclosure with Welsh raider Pelennor after the Novice Riders’ race. Pelennor led throughout and went further and further clear of his field in the final half-mile despite a clumsy jump at the last.

After a frustrating weekend, Richard Woollacott finally got on the scoresheet when Webberys Dream passed long-time leader Ned White (Will White) halfway up the run-in in the closing Maiden contest. “That’s my first home-bred winner and a first-ever winner for my joint owners William Hill and Jim Partridge”, said George Searle, who named the horse after his Bishops Nympton farm.

Taunton Vale Harriers at Kingston St Mary, nr Taunton
Easter Monday 25 April 2011

Rupert Tory, 32, achieved an ambition by riding his 10th career winner when Gunner Be Quick took Easter Monday’s Taunton Vale Harriers Men’s Open. Gunner Be Quick, owned and trained by Rupert’s parents, Norman and Monica Tory, led three out and sealed victory with a superb jump at the last. “I started with Mum’s brother, Robert Alner, and really got the bug when I galloped alongside Cool Dawn just before he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup”, said Rupert. “That was a dream come true and so was Flyers Nap winning twice at the Cheltenham Festival for my grandparents, Jim and Anne Tory. I’m in my 10th season now, and riding 10 winners is just as big a milestone to me”.

Michael Nolan took his seasonal tally to 11 and went clear in the National Novices table with a double – his first – for Bampton trainer Cherry Winzer. Three Half Crowns benefitted from first-time cheekpieces and the good-to-firm surface to lead over the last three fences in the Restricted. Tomerose made all in the Older Horse Maiden, although sole rival Shield Of Zeus (Emma Pugsley) closed to within ¾ length at the line. “David bought the horse from John Carr in Ireland and named him after his parents, Tommy and Rose”, said Sue McAllister, partner of the winning owner, Bideford property developer David Hooper.

Ian Chanin also reached the 11-winner mark on Robin Pike’s Rockwithacaveman, who finally got the better of Busy Buzzard (Michael Heard) at the last in the Confined. “He’s very genuine, always jumps well, and when I asked him for a big one at the last, he came up for me”, said Ian.

Own Line is Wincanton bound after his easy Ladies’ Open success under Cranmore trainer-rider Sarah Gould. “Sarah wants to go for the Wessex Area Champion Hunter Chase on 11 May and hopefully the course and fences will suit him”, said owner John Gould, Sarah’s father.

Glacial Call, jumping superbly under Jamie Thomas, landed the opening Hunt race for owners Chris and Jane Brake. “She needs competition as she never does more than asked, but her jumping has always kept her in her races”, said Jimmy Frost, husband of winning trainer, Nikki.

Gillingham farrier Tigga Barnes, 40, took the Young Horse Maiden on Wilde Thing for West Bagborough owner-trainer Alison Sherwin. Wilde Thing went clear three out and already had the race in safe keeping when nearest rival Little Moor refused and unseated Robert Hawker at the last.

Milly (Hattie Heal) was a comfortable winner of the 138cm pony race and Calypso (Harry Cobden) just got the better of Qwertyuiop (Vicky Merriman) after a tremendous duel up the straight in the 148cm contest.

The Cattistock Hunt at Littlewindsor

Bank Holiday Monday 02 May 2011

Special Account, jumping superbly under Neil Harris, was an impressive winner of the Cattistock Men’s Open at Littlewindsor. “We’re trying to educate him and turn him into a proper racehorse, so this was a nice experience for him”, said Brompton Regis handler Camilla Scott, who trains the six-year-old for Jenny Perry. Bought at Cheltenham after winning an Irish point-to-point and finishing sixth at the 2010 Punchestown Festival, Special Account is a possibility for Stratford’s John Corbet Cup on 27 May.

Richard Barber landed a treble with My Minds Maid (Hunt race) and the Axe Valley Racing Club pair Gypsy Jack (Restricted) and Shuffles (Maiden) to bring his weekend tally to eight. My Minds Maid, ridden by Richard’s grandson Jack Barber, always had the upper hand over sole remaining rival Mister Twirley after Russian Rain had refused to race. “She’s such a happy horse and would make a very good schoolmistress for a novice rider”, said owner Sarah Barber. Martin Cooney carried out his instructions perfectly on Gypsy Jack, who passed pacesetter Sobre Tresor at the penultimate. “I told Martin to wait, as Gypsy Jack’s a big baby and we wanted to make sure he stayed the trip”, explained Richard. Will Biddick reached the 24-winner mark and joined Richard Burton and Phillip York at the top of the National list with his win aboard Shuffles. Darren Edwards set a good pace on Josiah Bay, but had no answer when Will ranged alongside at the start of the final climb.

Kim Tripp’s enterprise was rewarded when her Duxy Hill Lady held off 1/4F Hoo La Baloo (Harry Derham) in the Novice Riders’ race. “I realised how good the ground was when I walked the course with the Area Pony Race Finalists”, said Kim. “I rang Ed, who was out on his mountain bike. He rode home, collected his kit, borrowed his mother’s Land Rover, drove to my place and picked up Duxy Hill Lady in the trailer. I met them on the Chard-Crewkerne road to direct them here and we arrived at 3.15pm with half-an-hour to spare to declare.

Hincheslea Moor held Trackmate’s renewed challenge by a nose to take the 2½ mile Maiden for David Turner and New Forest owner-trainer James H Young. “I bought a Midnight Legend gelding at Ascot and was waiting to go home when this one came into the ring, so I bought him speculatively as an unbroken three-year-old for 1300gns”, said James.

Ha Ho Magregor and Suzy Berry fought back to take the Ladies’ Open after Coombe Hill (Charlotte Tizzard) had looked the winner three out. “I’ve never given him a kick before, but when I did, he certainly responded”, smiled Suzy in the winner’s enclosure.

Ninfield Millionaires Delight made all under Harry Cobden to take the 2011 Wessex Area 138cm Pony Race Final, and Jack Sparrow (Hugo Hunt) got the better of a driving finish for the 148cm Final.

The Devon & Somerset Staghounds at Holnicote – 07 May 2011

Robbie Henderson took the Holnicote riding honours with a double on Beadnell Bay (Men’s Open) and Merry Terry (Intermediate) on Saturday. Beadnell Bay made all the running and finished alone to record his fourth Holnicote course success, nine years after his first. “He won here in 2002 under Mark Shears, in 2003 under Rilly Goschen, and 2007 for Ryan Bliss”, said Nyland trainer Stuart Penny and Steve Reeves, representing the horse’s owners, The Dufosee Family. “He’s an absolute legend”, added Robbie, describing the 14-year-old, who won 10 races for the late John Dufosee,
Merry Terry forged ahead after jumping the last upsides Roisini Bay (Matt Hampton). “It’s the first time he’s run right-handed, and you’re never sure how they’ll go, but Robbie said he handled it well”, said Sherborne owner-trainers Richard and Ruth Dimond.

Two trainers enjoyed their initial point-to-point successes at the meeting. Charlton Adam first season trainer Clare Bowles, 21, got off the mark at the third attempt with Restricted winner Captain Knock, who made all for Darren Edwards. The eight-year-old had shown good form in hunter chases and finished 12th in the Aintree Foxhunter for David Phelan before joining Clare’s yard a month ago. Josh Guerriero opened his account by partnering Holcombe Hitman to a very popular Maiden race success. Holcombe Hitman is jointly owned by John Wescott and his grandson, Giles Hawkins, whose brother Richard is recovering in Taunton’s Musgrove Park Hospital after a bad fall at Taunton racecourse on 12 April. “Grandfather bred Holcombe Hitman, I broke him and did the work with him before he joined Josh three weeks ago”, explained Giles. Giles and Richard’s sister Hannah had earlier returned to similarly warm applause after finishing second to Captain Knock on her parents Andrew and Trudi’s Mister Moonax.

Deloughtane and Vote For Doodle also achieved firsts for their connections. Alice Pearn drove Deloughtane past long-time leader Touch Of Flame for her family’s first-ever win in the Staghunters Cup after 35 years of trying. “I first rode in the race in 1976 when third on Ruthmac and owned Champagne Bar, who was second twice”, recalled Alice’s father, John. Vote For Doodle – “top lot at Ascot Spring Sales in April”, said Richard Prince – made a winning first appearance for Philip Prince in the Conditions race. Always prominent, the six-year-old was clear of his field during the last half-circuit.
John and Greer Norman’s Miss Midnight, who suffered from dehydration when fourth at Flete Park in April, bounced back with an easy Ladies’ Open win under Jenny Carr. The mare, who now heads the Wessex Area Leading Horse standings, may run at Stratford on 27 May, according to Thornicombe trainer Mary Tory.

D&SSH Point-to-Point Secretary Joy Rawle made a presentation to meeting Chairman Andrew Hawkins for all his efforts to water the course despite the circumstances of his son’s injury, and Lord and Lady Oaksey drew the winning tickets and presented the prizes for a raffle which raised £3,500 in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund.
