Smart delighted with Summer Fete.
Frankie Dettori tried to make all aboard Red Dune in the Group 3 Oaktree Stakes at Goodwood, but the filly faded in the last half furlong, and eventually had to settle for fourth place in the seven furlong contest.
The race was won by Brian Smmart's Summer Fete, with the impressive three year old filly coming with a withering run on the outside of the field, and denied the late challenges of Select and Please Sing to secure her biggest win to date.
Dick Turpin runs off with Richmond prize.
Richard Hannon has yet another smart two year old sprinter, as his Dick Turpin proved far too good for his rivals in this afternoon's Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood. Setting the early pace, he was headed at around the three furlong pole, but it was soon obvious he was taking a breather, as he renewed his effort at the two furlong marker, and eventually ran out a smart winner from Buzzword and Stargaze.
With the Coventry Stakes third and fourth well in arrears in today's contest, Dick Turpin looks a progressive type who could well challenge stable number one juvenile Canford Cliffs later in the season.
First time blinkers do the trick for Laa Rayb.
The Mark Johnston trained Laa Rayb has proved in the past he is a horse with plenty of ability, but in recent times the public display of his inherent ability has been in short supply. However, the use of first time blinkers for today's Totesport Mile proved to be the factor which galvanised him into action, and when he began his run for home at the two furlong pole, there was only going to be one winner of the Totesport sponsered handicap.
Spectate, Docothebay, and Webbow all put in great late runs to secure the minor honours, but they had no chance of catching Laa Rayb on today's form.
This success also gave Mark Johnston his fourth winner at Glorious Goodwood, and he now looks on course to become the leading trainer at this year's meeting.
Fahey uses apprentice to reduce burden.
In order to give the top weighted Knot In Wood some form of chance in Saturday's Stewards Cup, trainer Richard Fahey has acquired the services of apprentice jockey Barry McHugh to take his five pound claim off the 9 stone 11 pounds the Group 3 winner was due to carry in tomorrow's ultra competitive six furlong handicap.
Result throws doubt on draw advantage.
The two five furlong races at Goodwood yesterday afternoon seemed to suggest there was a definite advantage to being drawn low on the sprint course, but in today's second race - a six furlong sprint - the first three home; Johannes, Northern Dare and Jaconet, were all drawn high, and this now puts the whole draw issue into a confused position ahead of tomorrow's Blue Square Stewards Cup.
Course specialist Illustrious Blue adds to his Goodwood tally.
Ryan Moore made a brave attempt to lead all the way in the Group 3 Coutts Glorious Stakes, but after his mount Warringah had seen off most of his rivals, it was left to multiple course winner Illustrious Blue to overhaul him in the last seventy five yards of today's one mile four furlong contest. The win was Illustrious Blue's sixth at Goodwood, and his first over this middle distance trip, and as their was cut, it could well suggest the winner might get even further in the future.
The ever reliable Halicarnassis stayed on for third place, but the other big fancy in the race, Crime Scene, was frankly disappointing.
Ground no inconvenience to Prohibit.
Speaking on behalf of owner Prince Khalid Abdullah, racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe confirmed softer underfoot conditions for tomorrow's Stewards Cup at Goodwood would present no problem to current joint favourite Prohibit.
"His fifth behind High Standing in the Wokingham looks like pretty solid form, and tomorrow's ground will not be a problem, but as always, he will nneed some luck in negotiating his way through such a large field."
Connections give Midday warning.
Having had discussions with connections, Henry Cecil has confirmed Midday would be a doubtful runner for Saturday's Nassau Stakes if there is any more significant rain at Goodwood. The filly struggled in the mud at the Curragh, and failed to sparkle in the Irish Oaks, so soft going tomorrow would certainly see Prince Khalid Abdullah's three year old re-routed to an alternative target.
Goodwood going could become softer by tomorrow.
With a brighter interlude predicted for today, the going for the fourth day of Glorious Goodwood is likely to be good - soft in places.
However, with more heavy rain due this evening, the final day of the five day festival could witness soft underfoot conditions.
Candy could withdraw Markab.
Trainer Henry Candy is keeping a close eye on the weather, as he feels the well fancied Markab would not do himself justice if the going for tomorrow's Stewards Cup became soft, and the handler has indicated he could even withdraw the gelding if he thought conditions were totally unsuitable.
Hannon to give Paco Boy a short break.
As Paco Boy has had three hard Group 1 races in just six weeks, after consultation with connections, trainer Richard Hannon has decided to give the four year old a short break before renewing his racing activity in late August or early September.
Jarvis to operate dual training centres.
With Karl Burke now suspended from racing, it looks as if his former staff at Spigot Lodge are to be taken on by Burke's father in law Alan Jarvis, as the 61 year old is indicating he will operate two training centres during the time Burke remains banned from racing.
If Burke's former owners remain loyal to Jarvis, it is quite conceivable he can operate from two training centres while his son in laws future is worked out. However, the difficulty might come at the end of Burke's ban from racing, for there is no guarantee he will be granted a new training license if he were to re-apply to the BHA.
News from the Galway Festival.
- the Willie Mullins trained Sesenta is to have her first run since finishing a close second behind Judgethemoment in the Ascot Stakes, and although the handler is confident about her fitness ahead of today's Arthur's Day Handicap, he does have one major reservation,
"Although she will love the ground, today's trip of a mile and a half is a bit on the short side, and I am concerned she could be vunnerable to a mile and a half specialist."
- Pat Flynn's Bahrain Storm was far too good for favourite Deutschland in the closing stages of yesterday's Guinness Galway Hurdle, and his six length victory over a quality field certainly makes him a prospect to pick up other major hurdling honours once the winter national hunt campaign starts in earnest.
- Following his hard fought win over Glenstal Abbey in Thursday's signature novice hurdle, Willie Mullins admitted he was undecided whether to save Dual Gales for a novice hurdle at the Listowel Festival, or whether to prepare him for a novice steeplechasing career.
- The Dessie Hughes trained Montero was a very impressive ten length winner of the St James's Gate Novice Chase, but as he is quite a small horse, Hughes intends to keep him currently plying his trade in novice steeplechases, rather than the hurly burly of handicap company.
