Dynamite performance from Alfred Nobel.

An ice-cool Johnnie Murtagh brought Alfred Nobel from last to first in the last two furlongs of today's Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh. With the early pace being set by his stable mates Reggae Dancer and Air Chief Marshall, Murtagh kept Wayne Lordan on second favourite Walk On Bye constantly in his sights, but when Alfred Nobel made his move, the Tommy Stack filly found it difficult to quicken on the heavy going.

In the final furlong Murtagh just did enough to overcome stable mate Air Chief Marshall by a half length, with Walk On Bye having to settle for third place on this occasion.

The victory gave Aidan O'Brien his tenth success in the seven furlong Group 1 in the last twelve years, and quite remarkably, the first three home were all bred out of Coolmore sire Danehill Dancer, who now looks to have taken over the mantle of top soft ground sire from the legendary Saddlers Wells.

Debussy lands all the way success in France.

The John Gosden trained Debussy recaptured the form of his Epsom Blue Ribbon Trial success when landing this afternoon''s Group 2 Prix Eugene Adam in France. Leading from start to finish, the three year old son of Diesis had kept plenty in reserve, and showed a good turn of foot to hold off a late challenge from runner-up World Heritage.

Monsieur Chevalier to seek first Group victory.

With five victories already to his credit so far this season, Richard Hannon is hopeful Monsieur Chevalier can land his first Group race success in Tuesday's Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Punters of a nervous disposition will have to hope the probable favourite for the Molecomb Stakes does not leave it as late as he did when winning the Whetherbys Supersprint at Newbury last Saturday week. However, one note of caution may be, the multiple Hannon trained winner has yet to prove himself on Goodwood's unique down-hill sprint course.

Patkai to miss Goodwood Cup.

The Sir Michael Stoute trained Patkai, who chased home the history making Yeats in the Ascot Gold Cup, has suffered a set-back in training, and is now a confirmed absentee from this week's Group 2 Goodwood Cup.

Connections have indicated they are not sure how bad the injury may prove to be, but they are hoping the four year old may be fit in time for the Doncaster Cup in September.

Boy receives Sussex go-ahead.

With the going at Goodwood expected to be no worse than good for Wednesday's running of the BGC Sussex Stakes, Richard Hannon senior has confirmed Paco Boy will try to follow up on his Queen Anne Stakes success at Royal Ascot with another Group 1 success over a mile.

With top class three year old's Ghanaati and Rip Van Winkle also in the field, this year's Sussex Stakes looks certain to see the crowning of Europe's top miler after Wednesday's contest.

Connections opt for Arc target for Ask.

Following his close up third in yesterday's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, Ask's owner Patrick Fahey commented,

"If there had been cut in the ground, we would have given Conduit and Tartan Bearer a lot more to think about, and all in all, I was very happy with his run."

"The Arc now has to be the target, as he is almost certain to get cut in the ground at Longchamp in October. We do have an entry in the Irish Field St Leger, but these races take a lot out of your horse, and we would probably prefer to keep him fresh for the Arc."

Gosden taking it a step at a time.

John Gosden was naturally delighted with Alwaary's closing fourth in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, but although the bookmaking firms have reacted to the run by installing the three year old as joint favourite for the Doncaster St Leger, Gosden considers the move to be premature. Speaking after yesterday's Group 1 contest, Gosden said,

"He allowd himself to get too far behind at one stage in the race, so I was delighted with the way he ran on at the end. Talk of a Leger run is still a little premature, but I think we will have a crack at the Great Voltigeur at York, and if he comes through that, then we will consider our options."

Connections consider future aspirations for Look Here.

After her flat performance in the Ascot King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the connections of 2008 Epsom Oaks winner Look Here are to give their four year old a break before taking a final decision on her future.

It is thought, if trainer Ralph Beckett thinks it is unlikely she will recapture her winning form before the end of the season, connections may decide to retire her to the paddocks, where as a Classic winner, she will be in great demand.

Tiger strikes at home.

California trainer Wesley Ward's historic juvenile Royal Ascot winner Strike The Tiger enhanced his reputation with an impressive win in a $50,000 event at Colonial Downs in Virginia yesterday afternoon.

Ward is known for his top class juveniles, and having opened his account in Britain at Royal Ascot, he currently holds entries in the Middle Park and Cheveley Park Stud Stakes at Newmarket later in the season.

Dascomb to have talks with Owen representatives.

If reports are correct, trainer Tom Dascomb is to hold talks with representatives of Michael Owen's Manor House Stables about taking over from suspended Nicky Vaughn at the purpose built racing facility in Malpas Cheshire.

As Dascomb already has some good horses in training, it is understood discussions will revolve around his committments to other owners, and how that could be incorporated into training the Michael Owen string.

Scoop Six rolls-over to next week.

When Clive BBrittain's Al Muheer labnded the Abu Dhabi International Handicap at odds of 40/1, all interest in yesterday's Totesport Scoop Six Bet ended, and £75,587 will now roll-over to next Saturday.

With the Bonus Fund having been shared by three tickets who picked Knot In Wood in the Skybet Dash, only yesterday's pool of £32,394 rolls-over to next weekend.

Flood decides to call it a day.

Blaming a stable of moderate horses and owners who failed to pay their bills on time, trainer David Flood has decided to take a break from the training of race horses. Talking about his decision, Flood said,

"I have two young children, and I want to spend sonme quality time with them instead of working 24 7 for very little return. I appreciate times are hard for everyone, but when owners don't pay their bills, it is impossible to make ends meet."

"If the general economy improves over the next couple of years, then I may be tempted to re-apply for a training license, but I would have to be sure of obtaining some owners with quality horses to be tempted back into the sport."

Mahon re-applies for his license after ban.

Having completed his seven month ban from riding for submitting a substitute urine sample during a randon drugs test at the British Racing School, promising amateur Ray Mahon has submitted an application for a riding license, and this is now subject to scrutiny and approval by the BHA.

Mahon had been connected to the Paul Nicholls stable, but subject to his license application being approved, he will now have to convince owners he has put his past indiscretions behind him.

Speaking over the weekend, 22 year old Mahon said,

"I have learnt from my experience, and I am now determined to pursue an effective and honest career in racing."

Channon hopeful of good show from Eva.

Although not explaining her poor run in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket's July Cup Meeting, trainer Mick Channon now reports Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes winner Eva's Request is once more 'bouncing' on her home gallops, and Channon is hopeful she will put in a good performance when she meets male rivals for the first time this season in Tuesday's Group 2 Betfair Cup at Glorious Goodwood.
