Loco runs out of puff in final stride.

Although Scintillo obtained first run in the final furlong of today's Group 3 Winter Derby at Lingfield, the well supported favourite Premio Loco seemed to have the move covered as he gained ground with a run on the outside of the field, but in the last few strides, his run faultered, and Scintillo managed to have his head in front as the two passed the post.

Rivals put to sword by Spanish Conquest.

The Philip Hobbs trained Spanish Conquest had only completed his first victory over timber earlier this week at Kempton Park, but by turning out quickly in this afternoon's Lewis Alexander Connorton Handicap, he incurred no penalty, and his bottom weight was further enhanced by a five pound claim from Rhys Flint. The combination was unstopable, as the former Sir Mark Prescott trained five year old forged clear over the final two obstacles to win by twelve lengths from Stoop To Conquer.

Based on this week's work, Philip Hobbs has a useful and progressive recruit to his national hunt string.

Arganil lives up to gamble.

In today's Hever Handicap Sprint at Lingfield Park, the Kevin Ryan trained Arganil was all the rage with the punters prior to the race, being supported into seven to two from five to one, and on this occasion the money was a good guide as Arganil completed a confident victory.

Jarvis hoping for inclusion of Fireside.

Although Michael Jarvis is keeping Fireside prepared for next week's Lincoln Handicap, if the number of entrants does not reduce dramatically in the next few days, his well supported four year old may miss the cut for the race, which would then involve re-preparation for an alternative early season target.

Great Leighs parties given fixture deadline.

The BHA have advised Great Leighs administrators Deloitte they have only two months to assemble a new management company, otherwise, the course will have passed the fixture deadline for the 2010 season, and no fixtures will be allocated to a new management company after that time.

It is hoped this deadline will focus minds, as the alternative could involve the total demise of Great Leighs as a horseracing venue for the foreseeable future.

Breeds Breeze joins stable mate Neptune Collonges on the sidelines.

Paul Nicholls has confirmed his Feltham Novices Chase winner Breeds Breeze will miss the Mildmay Novice Chase at the Aintree Festival, as the fall he suffered in the Reynoldstown Chase at Ascot has left him with a similar leg injury as stable mate Neptune Collonges. As rest is the main cure for this type of injury, Breeds Breeze could be sidelined for a large part of the 2009 2010 national hunt season.

Master of Arts to miss the rest of the current season.

It appears Master of Arts may have an excuse for his poor eleventh position in the Triumph Hurdle. Trainer David Pipe has confirmed he came back lame from the race, and subsequent investigations have identified a leg injury which will keep him off the track for the remainder of the current national hunt season.

Cumani Announcements.

Luca Cumani used his Press Open Day at his Bedford House stables to confirm Dane O'Neil will ride the well fancied Swop in next Saturday's Lincoln Handicap. While three year old filly Fantasia will have her first seasonal run in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes at the Newmarket Craven Meeting, and if she does well there, the fillywill probably head to Longchamp for the French 1,000 Guineas.

J'Y Vole disappoints in seasonal debut.

Having not stepped on a race track since her disappointing run at Auteuil in June 2008, J'Y Vole was supported into favouritism for her come-back run in yesterday's Shamrock Handicap Chase at Gowran Park, but the mare proved to be a great disappointment.

Setting off in front, she led until entering the straight on the final circuit, but was then swallowed up by the pack, with the John Lennon trained outsider Battle Axe eventually running out a comprehensive winner from good yardstick Conna Castle.

Aran Concerto to return at Navan.

Noel Meade is planning to run Aran Concerto at next Saturday's Navan meeting as a preparation for the Powers Gold Cup at the Easter Fairyhouse Festival.

A dual Grade One winner over hurdles, the eight year old had a winning run over fences at Navan back in November, and the trainer is hopeful another victory at his favourite track may give Aran Concerto the confidence to go on to Fairyhouse and win a major Grade One prize over fences.

Ladbrokes launch Back British Campaign.

In an undisguised attack on offshore betting companies, Ladbrokes have today launched an advertising campaign on the benefits of gambling with UK registered bookmakers. The first of the advertisements, which appear in today's Racing Post, point out the breadth and depth of benefit which accrues to the british economy from companies like Ladbrokes.

The firm point out; they employ fifteen thousand people in the UK, they contribute to the horserace betting levy, pay UK taxes, and service customers through UK based betting operations.

To back up their claims, Ladbrokes itemise the benefits to the british economy in 2008 were; £100.4 million in gross profits taxation, £68.5 million in Value Added Tax, £49.9 million in corporation tax, plus £40.4 million to the Horserace Levy, and £45 million in local taxes. Ladbrokes further point out that their Levy contributions in 2007 2008 amounted to thirty five per cent of the total contribution from UK based betting firms.

The company are trying to make punters aware of the damage they are actually doing to the british economy during a period of recession when they place their wagers with companies based in the tax havens of Gibraltar, Malta, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Island of Alderney.

During the coming weeks, we will keep you posted on what impact this campaign has on british betting habits, and what views other firms may have on the Ladbrokes campaign.
