Moore gets eight day enforced holiday.
Ryan Moore fell foul of the stewards in the first race on today's York card, and the eight day ban he picked up for Careless Riding means he will miss the Tattersalls Millions Champion Stakes Meeting at the Curragh, plus the first section of the St Leger Meeting at Doncaster.
The stewards spotted the move he made on Red Badge in the DBS £300,000 Yearling Sales Race which left Neil Callan, the rider of 3/1 favourite Rodrigo de Torres, falling to the Knavesmire turf. The stewards immediately called Moore to an enquiry, and after viewing the evidence, they gave him an eight day ban for Careless Riding - the ban to run between 03 and 10 September inclusive.
Tanoura gives Oxx another winner.
With favourite Leocorno leading at the furlong pole, Michael Kinane once more timed his run to perfection to land the York Listed fillies Galtres Stakes on the Aga Khan's Tanoura, and thereby give John Oxx his second winner of the week following on from Sea The Stars well timed run to land the Juddmonte International Stakes on Tuesday.
Following the race, Kinane praised his filly,
"She quickened nicely, and I think she will get further in time. I certainly see no reason why she should not pick up a Group prize in due course."
Based on today's performance, Leocorno has ability, but she may be one of Sir Michael Stoute's slow developers, and may be best left until next season. Meanwhile, the third placed Flame of Gibraltar was doing her best work at the end of the race, and may need a mile and three quarters to recapture her winning thread.
Dar re mi takes advantage of slow starting Sariska.
Michael Bell may have been concerned the ground at York was too firm for Sariska for this afternoon's Group 1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks, but it was a tardy start which cost her the race in the long run. Left six lengths behind her rivals at the start, Jamie Spencer first had to tack on to the pack as Lancashire Oakes winner Barshiba took the field along at a strong pace. By the time the runners entered the home straight, Sariska was still fifth of the six runners, and when Dar re mi went for home under Jimmy Fortune at the two furlong pole, Jamie Spencer was already applying full pressure to Sariska. The fact she got as near as three quarters of a length from overhauling Dar re mi at the line proves she has plenty of stamina. But on the day, the John Gosden trained Dar re mi was the better filly, and she has now added the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks to her recent success in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes.
Jaguar for the Lady.
As predicted by Brian Meehan, Lady of the Desert zoomed away from her rivals in the Group 2 Jaguar Cars Lowther Stakes at York this afternoon. Leading virtually from start to finish, the Princess Margaret Stakes winner was not given a hard time by partner Martin Dwyer, but she lengthened as a favourite should when asked in the final furlong, running on strongly to score by three lengths from second favourite Beyond Desire. The Simon Callaghan trained Dubawi Heights continued her progression, running on well for third place, and all three fillies will be winning more races in the future.
Hoodoo seems to have settled on Stoute horses.
Having lost Tartan Bearer from the Juddmonte International on Tuesday morning due to lameness, and then having to watch Harbinger put in a very disappointing display in the Great Voltigeur Stakes, the Sir Michael Stoute yard would have been hoping for some better news as the week progressed, but it would now appear they are under some form of hoodoo , for today they have had to withdraw the well fancied Glass Harmonium from tomorrow's Group 3 Strensall Stakes as this morning he was discovered to be running a temperature.
>>>>>> late news -
It now appears, the injury to Tartan Bearer is worse than first thought, and connections confirmed this afternoon, he will not race again this season.
The way things are going this week, Sir Michael Stoute will be glad to see the back of this year's York Ebor Festival.
Well regarded pair to meet again.
The Michael Bell trained Prompter is a full brother to Derby winner Motivator, and a win in his first run at Chester earlier in the season indicated he was a smart individual, but in his second outing, he had to settle for second place behind Clive Cox's Black Spirit at Ascot in July.
After today's final declerations, the pair are due to clash again in this Saturday's Solario Stakes at Sandown, and with Godolphin also having Buzzword, and Richard Hannon the unexposed Cumulus Nimbus, Saturday's seven furlong contest is likely to produce one of the market leaders for next year's major races, and it is one avid punters should certainly record for future reference.
Tonight's meeting at Killarney called off!
Torrential overnight rain has left the chase course at Killarney totally waterlogged, and officials have been left with no option but to cancel this evening's planned card.
Sunshine and showers are forecast for today, and it is understood a further inspection will take place at 7.30 am on Friday morning to ascertain as to whether tomorrow's meeting can go ahead.
On a positive note, the Clerk of the Course told us this morning, the hurdles and flat courses are now fully raceable, and providing there is no further torrential rain, he is very hopeful racing will take place on Friday.
Harbinger very unlikely for St Leger.
Connections of Harbinger have confirmed they are still investigating his lack lustre display in Tuesday's Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, and with the possibility emerging that the three year old is suffering from the same muscle problem which kept him off the track for two months earlier in the season, then it is almost certain he will not run in the Doncaster St Leger.
However, on a more positive note, the same connections did say,
"If the current problem can be diagnosed, we hoped Harbinger will race again before the end of the season."
Hits Only Vic to head to Cesarawitch.
Declan Carroll was delighted with Hits Only Vic's third place in Wednesday's Totesport Ebor Handicap, and after the race, the handler commented,
"That has to be the best performance of his racing career! He only finished one length behind the winner in one of the most competitive handicaps of the season, and he achieved that on ground totally unsuited to his action. I will definitely aim him at the Cesarawitch, and hopefully he will get his more preferred easy ground when he runs at Newmarket."
