Anonymous Scoop Six punter adds to his haul.
The anonymous Betfair punter who won around six hundred thousand pounds last Saturday added the Bonus Fund pot of £287,630 to his total winnings when his selection Darley Sun scooted away with this afternoon's Cesarewich at Newmarket.
Gosden issues Rainbow warning.
Ahead of this evening's E P Taylor Stakes at Woodbine in Canada, trainer John Gosden has issued the warning, race favourite Rainbow view has started to change into her winter coat, and the trainer is therefore concerned she will not put her best foot forward in today's Group 1 contest.
Akmal gives Dunlop a milestone victory.
When Akmal led from start to finish in today's Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket, it was not only the three year old's seventh victory of the season, it also gave trainer John Dunlop his two hundred and fiftieth winner at Newmarket.
As Dunlop admitted later,
"I hate to admit I had my very first winner at Newmarket in 1966, but despite the reminder about the length of my training career, it was very pleasant to secure such a training milestone."
Ashalanda denies Crystal Capella in final stride.
For virtually all of today's Group 2 Pride Stakes at Newmarket, it looked as if Ryan Moore had done everything right on race favourite Crystal Capella - Moore tracked the pace for the first mile, kicked three lengths clear between the two and one furlong poles, but Christophe Lemaire on the Jean Claude Rouget trained Ashalanda suddenly got his mount into top gear, and his filly just collared Crystal Capella in the final stride of today's ten furlong contest.
As the race is named in honour of Jean Claude Rouget's outstanding filly Pride, the french trainer was obviously very pleased with the final result.
Alaiyma provides Oxx and Kinane with another win.
In what can only be described as a perfect season, the John Oxx Michael Kinane combination struck again when Alaiyma landed the Listed Navigation Stakes at this afternoon's meeting at Cork. Dogged and determined, the Oxx filly stayed on stronger than her rivals to secure a one length victory, and once more brought a smile to the usually unemotional features of Michael Kinane.
Music Show an unexpected success.
Sir Michael Stoute's odds on favourite Tabassum tried to make all in today's Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket, but in the final half furlong she had to give way to the Mick Channon trained 25/1 outsider Music Show, and even lost the runners up spot to 16/1 shot Atasari.
Darley Sun shines in Cesarewich.
The extremely well supported race favourite Darley Sun showed his second in the Doncaster Cup was no fluke as he came with a scintallating late charge to run away with today's Cesarewich at Newmarket. Last year's third Mamlook went one better with a strong finishing runners up spot, and there was further misery for the bookmakers when the extremely well supported each way pair Sereth and Dayia took third and fourth places in today's marathon contest.
Twice Over in suprise Champion Stakes victory.
It was clear from a long way out Fame and Glory had had one race too many in today's Group 1 Champion Stakes at Newmarket, and it was left to the in form horses Twice Over and Mawatheeq to fight out the closing stages of today's ten furlong contest.
Tom Queally had always kept Twice Over in close attendance to Fame and Glory, but as the Ballydoyle pacemaker Set Sail came back to the field, it was Henry Cecil's four year old who found plenty as Fame and Glory failed to respond to Johnnie Murtagh's urgings.
In the final furlong, Marcus Tregonning's much improved Mawatheeq and John Gosden's Pipe Dreamer came through to lay down their challenges, but Twice Over stayed on strongly to land his third consecutive pattern race victory, and his biggest prize to date. Mawatheeq added a runners up spot in the Champion Stakes to his recent Cumberland Lodge Stakes victory, but Pipe Dreamer was pipped for third by the late finish of dual Oaks winner Sariska.
Beethoven finds the right tune in Dewhurst.
It seemed Johnnie Murtagh was so certain Steinbeck would see out today's seven furlong trip of the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, he set out to make all, but in the final furlong it was stable companions Beethoven and Fencing Master who took the honours.
Beethoven has been highly tried all season, but had failed to deliver in major company, but with Ryan Moore urging him along in today's top class field, the 33/1 shot found plenty up the climb to the line, holding on stoutly from the late finishing stable companion Fencing Master and the Clive Cox trained Xtension. The front running Steinbeck had to settle for fourth place on only his second run of the season, but it is likely this well regarded type will improve as a three year old, and he does remind one of Rip Van Winkle in that regard.
Starluck very impressive in Cheltenham opener.
Virtually giving partner Timmy Murphy an 'armchair ride', former smart novice hurdler Starluck swamped his rivals with a very impressive final two furlongs in today's extended two mile opener on the Cheltenham card. Pulling himself into contention before the last, Murphy had the luxury of sitting still as Starluck powered up the Cheltenham hill, leaving Ruby Walsh and his mount Classic Swain struggling on for second place.
If this is a sample of what is to come from Starluck this season, some of the leading hurdlers better tend to their laurels.
Arabian Gleam franks Doncaster form in Victor Chandler.
Jeremy Noseda's Arabian Gleam paid a huge complment to Doncaster winner Duff when winning this afternoon's Group 2 Victor Chandler Challenge Stakes at Newmarket.
The early pace was made by Irish filly Cuis Ghaire and race favourite Ashram, but as Cuis Ghaire began to fade, Johnnie Murtagh seized his opportunity, and sent Arabian Gleam alongside Ashram, but as he met the rising ground the five year old powered ahead and looked certain to collect, but near the line he had to hold off the late challenge of the Barry Hills trained Ouqbaa, but Murtagh kept his mount up to the task, and the pair eventually prevailed by a neck, with Donativum a further three quarters of a length further back in third place.
Melbourne Cup winner Viewed takes Caulfield Cup.
The 2008 Melbourne Cup victor Viewed became only the third horse to go on and win the Caulfield Cup the following season. Hugging the rail throughout today's 2,400 metre contest, Viewed obtained all the breaks as horses faded and allowed him through, but he ran on strongly at the finish to hold off the late challenge of stable mate Roman Emperor.
Godolphin's Kirkleess was the best of the european rivals, finishing five and a half lengths behind the winner in eighth position, but Luca Cumani's Cima de Triomphe disappointed and only finished in thirteenth place.
Today's Weather for major meetings.
If the weather people ar correct, today's meeting at Newmarket will see a mixture of sunshine and cloud, with the possibility of occasional drizzle.
Cheltenham should remain fine and generally sunny.
Today's big losers.
Providing the bookmakers are being open about their liabilities, if either Sereth or Wells Lyrical are successfulin today's Cesarewich, the gambling firms could face negative returns on the ultra competitive long distance race.
Obviously having read our article yesterday, Pricewise in the Racing Post has tipped Doctor Fremantle in the Champion Stakes, and Sir Michael Stoute's charge has been the subject of considerable support this morning.
Bonus fund could still be up for grabs.
While we wish the anonymous Betfair punter every success in trying to add today's Scoop Six Bonus Fund to his already large winnings from last week, if he should happen to miss out on picking the winner of the bonus race, there will be over three hundred thousand pounds in next week's bonus pot. But to potentially qualify for that option, you must first solve the riddle of today's six races:
Leg 1 - 1.50 pm Newmarket.
Leg 2 - 2.25 pm Newmarket.
Leg 3 - 2.40 pm Cheltenham.
Leg 4 - 3.00 pm Newmarket.
Leg 5 - 3.15 pm Cheltenham.
