Never On Sunday as Goldacova flops.
Just half an hour after winning with Stacelita, trainer Jean-Claude Rouget and jockey Christophe Lemaire teamed up again to land the Group 1 Prix d'ispahan as Never On Sunday gave a fluent performance to see off his rivals.
The big disappointment was Breeders Cup Mile winner Goldacova, who never fired in today's contest, and trailed in well behind the worthy winner.
Stacelita very impressive at Longchamp.
Stacelita was the six length victor of this afternoon's Group 1 Prix de Saint Alary at Longchamp, and the easwe with which she disposed of her rivals makes her a very interesting prospect for the remainder of the current flat season.
Surrey Stakes option for Croisultan.
Although still officially in the Investec Derby list, trainer Liam McAteer said after his Croisultan had landed the major race at this afternoon's Navan Meeting,
"He is a big striding horse, and did well to win in today's ground, but I think the Derby may come too soon. The Listed Surrey Stakes at the Epsom Meeting is an option, and we may go for that.
He is very progressive, and I think he will show a lot more in the second half of the season".
Cumani has to settle for second again.
Luca Cumani had to watch on once more as one of his horses just failed to land a major international Group 1 prize. For in today's Singapore Airlines International Cup in Singapore, his Hong Kong winner Presvis just failed with a late challenge to the Pascal Bary trained Gloria de Campeao.
The Brazilian bred winner has impeccable form, having finished as runner up to Well Armed in the Dubai World Cup, and his Japanese jockey made good use of him, controlling the race from the front over the last four furlongs.
Conversely, Ryan Moore had dropped Presvis to the back of the field, and then came with a late run, but his efforts were not enough to catch the winner over the final two furlongs.
Cumani's former charge Bankable, now with Mike de Kock, ran on for third place.
Sacred Kingdom too strong for Rocket Man.
In today's Singapore Krisflyer Sprint, 2008 winner Take Over Target failed to figure as the Hong Kong Ricky Yiu trained Sacred Kingdom got the better of the unbeaten race favourite Rocket Man in a tight finish. Frankie Dettori came with a late run on the Godolphin owned Diabolical, but he had to settle for third place as the first two fought it out over the final half furlong.
Navan gets the go-ahead.
The forecast overnight heavy precipatation over most of Ireland did not materialize, and with only two millimetres of rain actually falling on the course, this afternoon's meeting at Navan passed its 8.00 am inspection and racing goes ahead this afternoon as planned. The official going is described as soft, heavy in places.
Rachel Alexandra sees off the colts in Preakness.
In front of a huge crowd of 77,650 at Pimlico racecourse, Rachel Alexandra became the first filly since 1924 to win the second leg of the U S Triple Crown.
Starting smartly from her wide draw in the one hundred and thirty fourth running of the Preakness Stakes, she took the lead in the back stretch, and from that point on, she was never headed. Jockey Calvin Borel rode a clever race from the front, for as the filly entered the home straight, he kicked her on, and she stole a lead that extended to four lengths at the one furlong pole, and although she started to falter in the final furlong, Musket Man, and then Kentucky Derby winner Mind That Bird, could never peg her back.
At the end, the wonder filly held on from Mind That Bird by one length, with Musket Man having to settle for third place.
Hannon looking forward to Soul City debut.
Richard Hannon is confident his Goffs Millions victor Soul City is in peak form ahead of next week's Boylesports Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh, and certainly, the form of the Goffs Millions race is very promising, with the second placed Gan Amhras already finishing third in the Stan James 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, while the Goffs third, Intense Focus, went on to win last year's Dewhirst Stakes. Add to the form statistics the fact the Hannon horses are performing very well at present, and it would appear Soul City could go close if he has carried his two year old form forward into his three year old career.
Crowded House decision expected early this week.
Connections of Crowded House have decided to make their plans public regarding the three year old's next race during the first couple of days of this upcoming week. The Racing Post Trophy winner was found to have been suffering from a virus after his lack lustre performance in last week's Dante Stakes, and the decision on his next run will include computations on how long it will take to ensure he is back to one hundred per cent fitness for his next outing. At this stage, Royal Ascot or the Irish Derby look the more likely options rather than the Epsom Derby.
Post Lockinge running plans.
As we indicated in yesterday's news, John Gosden's Lockinge Stakes winner Virtual will now go for the Eclipse Stakes over ten furlongs.
Although disappointed Paco Boy did not get home over a mile on soft ground, Richard Hannon intends to run his charge over a mile at Royal Ascot if the going is good or better.
Godolphin were delighted with yesterday's runner up Alexandros, and his next target is likely to be the Diomed Stakes at the Epsom Derby meeting.
Following his attempt to lead all the way, Henry Cecil believes Twice Over was coming back at the end of yesterday's race, and he therefore thinks a mile is too short for his gutsy performer, so the Prince of Wales's Stakes over a longer trip at Royal Ascot is his most likely next option.
Doubts over Leocorno Oaks entry.
With some bookmaking firms the Sir Michael Stoute trained Leocorno is as low as eight to one for the Investec Oaks at Epsom, but connections have indicated her participation is currently only fifty fifty, and a final decision will only be made after analysis of her debut in handicap company later in the week.
Mullins aiming to raid Paris.
In addition to Pomme Tiepy in the Grand Steeplechase de Paris, Ireland's leading national hunt trainer Willie Mullins is taking seven other stable stars to Autueil racecourse in Paris for next weekend's major French national hunt meeting. At the seven day decleration stage Mullins also has experienced campaigners Fivefourthree, J'Y Vole, Shakervilles and Quevega, along with novices Barker, Kemps, and Deutschland.
Stoute very happy with Tartan Bearer.
News coming out of the Sir Michael Stoute yard suggests Sandown Group 3 winner Tartan Bearer has come on for his recent run, and is in fine form at home, and the handler is said to be confident of a good run in next weekend's Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh.
New York surface gets the thumbs up.
Feedback from the owners, trainers and jockeys involved in last week's three day Dante Meeting has been positive and complimentary of the new racing surface and drainage installed since last August's Ebor Meeting. Even when the going was described as soft on Friday, several jockeys remarked how well it rode compared with the old Knavesmire surface.
Ffoslas to commemorate Jamie.
The very first race to be staged at the new Ffoslas racecourse on the evening of 18 June will be a memorial contest which will commemorate apprentice jockey Jamie Yates, who was so tragically murdered earlier this year.
Dixon sets the right example.
President of the Racehorse Owners Association, Paul Dixon, has been the first owner to pledge his horses to the Speed Bonus Day at Goodwood racecourse on 13 September.
The day's card will figure races from five furlongs up to two miles, and horses will not only race against each other, but they will also race against the Racing Post standard times set for each distance. In addition to standard prize money, a bonus of one hundred thousand pounds will be on offer to the horse who surpasses the standard time by the largest margin.
