Ruby and Alliance victorious.
Sitting in behind long time leader Church Island on the final circuit of today's Listowel Guinness Kerry National, it looked as if the Tony Martin trained stable mates Northern Alliance and Royal County Star would fight out the finish of the three mile handicap as they quickened past Church Island after the second from home, but Royal County Star made a blunder at the last fence, and allowed Ruby Walsh on Northern Alliance to claim his fourth win in the race in the last six years. The gallant Church Island found his second wind on the run in, and finished only a length behind the winner, but it was that man Walsh who claimed the major race spoils once again.
Bankable credits himself with a Sandown Listed success.
Travelling strongly throughout, Bankable, currently trained by Gary Moore, prepared for his Dubai winter campaign with a Listed success in today's Listed Fortune Stakes at Sandown Park.
Never in any difficulty, the five year old cruised to a solid one length victory, and now seems on course to compete at the highest level in Dubai.
Nashmiah lands another Listed success.
Clive Brittain's three year old filly Nashmiah has been on the go since March, but there was no evidence of any tiredness as she showed good pace to land the ten furlong John Musker Stakes at Great Yarmouth this afternoon.
Sent on by Neil Callan at the two furlong pole, Nashmiah held off the late challenge of Mooakada by three quarters of a length and in so doing, she collected her fourth Listed prize of the season.
Dick Turpin unlikely competitor in Mill Reef.
With scant likelyhood of any cut at Newbury for Saturday's Mill Reef Stakes, Richard Hannon has put anti post punters on warning - Dick Turpin is an unlikely competitor in Saturday's contest.
O'Brien more optimistic about Rip Van Winkle.
Aidan O'Brien is today sounding more optimistic about getting his emphatic Sussex Stakes winner Rip Van Winkle to Ascot for this year's Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. In an interview with the Irish Times, O'Brien is quoted as saying,
"We are getting there, and if everything stays on track, he should line up for the QE II.
I know Johnnie Murtagh really loves the horse, and he is particularly keen to give him his opportunity at Ascot, and providing we have no more trouble with his feet, I think he might just make it."
Arctic supplemented for Middle Park Stakes.
The Tracy Collins trained Arctic remains unbeaten after his recent victory in the Round Tower Stakes, and it is no secret he is extremely well regarded by his connections, so perhaps it is no suprise he has today been supplemented for the Middle Park Stakes on 02 October at Newmarket.
Fallon confirmed for Youmzain Arc ride.
Mick Channon has today confirmed Kieran Fallon will ride Youmzain in this year's Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on 04 October.
Fallon has already had some experience of his Arc mount, for he accompanied the six year old when he finished a somewhat disappointing third in the recent Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Baden behind Getaway at Baden Baden. But connections are sticking with Fallon because he is capable of weaving the kind of riding magic which could duplicate Youmzain's two successive second places in the last two runnings of the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe.
American date for Moneycan'tbuylove.
Michael Bell was so happy with the way Moneycan'tbuylove came out of her third position behind Midday and Rainbow view in the Nassau Stakes, he is confident she will be very successful when she makes her American racing debut under Jamie Spencer in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont Park on 03 October. Discussing her arrangements, Bell said,
"She is in fine form on the gallops, and we will send her out to New York next week. I am delighted Jamie Spencer is taking the ride, as he gets on very well with her, and everything points to a big run at Belmont Park."
Fleming making plan for Starluck.
In his first year of training from his Dorking base, Alan Fleming had the good fortune to have the quality services of novice hurdler Starluck during his first national hunt campaign. A winner of three consecutive novice hurdle races before finishing fourth in the Triumph Hurdle and then third at Aintree, Starluck has just restarted training for the upcoming campaign, and Fleming is already well advanced on a suitable development plan for his stable star.
"I would like to give him a run in a good handicap or conditions race on the flat, and then I would hope to get him ready for a crack at the wbx.com Hurdle at Kempton in mid October. Providing he comes out of those races in good condition, then I would hope to move him up to Grade races for the rest of the season."
Cecil keen on Ajaan Cesarawitch chances.
Although Ajaan has not won since 2008, handler Henry Cecil is unusually bullish about his chances in the October running of the Cesarawitch at Newmarket,
"He is in very fine condition at present, and he showed by his second place in the Chester Cup, a two and a quarter mile trip is his ideal distance. Providing the ground remains good, I see no reason why he should not go close in this year's Cesarawitch."
Serious Attitude to be rested.
It would appear Serious Attitude suffered muscle damage when finishing eighth behind Kings Apostle in the August running of the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville, and rather than risk further damage, trainer Rae Guest has confirmed last year's Cheveley Park Stakes winner will now be rested for the remainder of the current flat season, but will be brought back for a career as a four year old sprinter.
Habaayib to return in Cheveley Park Stakes.
Now fully recovered from a ringworm infection which caused her to miss the Lowther Stakes at York's Ebor Meeting, the Ed Dunlop trained Albany Stakes winner Habaayib is reported to be in excellent condition ahead of her intended run in the Cheveley Park Stakes, and another progressive performance could see the filly become one of the favourites for next year's Newmarket 1,000 Guineas.
Unexpected support for Lloyd Webber's appeal.
In a totally unexpected development, President of the French Owners Association Philippe Bouchara has thrown his weight behind the Dar re mi Prix Vermeille disqualification appeal being headed by Lord Lloyd Webber.
Apparently, Monsieur Bouchara not only thinks Dar re mi should retain her first place gained in Sunday's Group 1 contest, he is also in favour of French racing rules being brought into harmony with the existing rules used in Britain and Ireland, and his support could open up the Dar re mi incident into a wider discussion regarding the european harmonisation of racing rules.
Possible Malton witness spotted on cctv images.
Yorkshire police have confirmed a study of the cctv footage from the area around the site of the suspected arson attack at a block of flats in Norton has shown a grainy image of a person who could have been a witness to the fatal incident. Police are trying to clean up the image, and in the meantime, they are calling on the prospective witness to come forward.
Order of Merit to continue for one more year.
With the BHA having passed on the thorny subject of the National Hunt Order of Merit to Racing Enterprises Limited, it is not a suprise to learn, REL are to run the bonus system on major national hunt races for another year while they finalise arrangements on an alternative merit system. However, the funds made available for this year's awards will be reduced in line with the reductions being made throughout the 2009 2010 racing budgets.
Kauto Star's dam dies after paddock accident.
It was reported on Tuesday, Kauto Relka, the dam of double Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Kauto Star, had fatally damaged her spine in a paddock incident. A prolific brood mare, Kauto Relka had produced thirteen offspring in fourteen cycles, and french owner and breeder Henri Aubert admitted the mare would be a sad loss to his breeding operation.
Lingfield on track to complete all weather upgrade.
After seeking permission from the BHA, Tuesday's race meeting at Lingfield Park went ahead on the turf track, as the all weather circuit is currently undergoing a major refurbishment which should be completed for the meeting scheduled for 02 October.
First laid in 2001, the polytrack circuit was described by many as having become dead and lifeless in recent times, and conscious of the needs of owners trainers and jockeys, the Lingfield executive have now undertaken an upgrading and refurbishment of the all weather circuit, which they hope will enliven future race meetings on the artificial surface.
Spencer settles Irish tax bill.
The revenue commissioners in the Irish Republic have confirmed Jamie Spencer has this week settled a 100,000 euro bill for undisclosed Capital Gains Tax.
In order to put the smile back on his face, the busy jockey will no doubt be looking for some big winners over the next couple of months, and may well be worth following in the upcoming Pattern and Sales races.
