Two Pound punter wins Scoop Six.
One lucky punter from Cowley in Oxfordshire has won today's Scoop Six with just a single two pound line. There were in fact two tickets going on to the 3.45 pm at Newbury, with one going on winner Main Aim, and the other on the unplaced Exclaimation.
Today's lucky winner never had any doubts as Main Aim romped in by seven lengths, and netted the Cowley punter £292,612 on today's Win Fund, and he or she will now go forward to next week with the possibility of picking up another £125,405 on next week's Bonus Fund race which will either be at Haydock or Newmarket.
Aqwaal finds it hard to overcome Decision.
The Ed Dunlop trained Aqwaal was probably the best backed horse of the day, but in this afternoon's 3 year old Heritage Handicap at Newbury, he found it very difficult the get the better of the front running Decision. In fact, at the end of the ten furlong contest it took all of Aqwaal's reserves to just pip the plucky outsider Decision on the line.
Admittedly, Aqwaal was giving the runner up over a stone in weight, so he is certainly entitled to go on to better things this season, but Decision could also be worth following in major three year old handicaps when there is cut in the ground.
Virtual grabs Lockinge on the line.
With a furlong to go, one of four horses could have won today's Group 1 Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. Favourite Paco Boy had come with a devastating turn of foot to get his head in front of long time leader Twice Over, but the John Gosden trained Virtual and Godolphin's Alexandros were also in close attention. But the soft ground proved the undoing of Paco Boy, and half a furlong from the line Virtual and Alexandros went on. Jjust when it seemed certain Frankie Dettori had won the Group 1 contest, somehow Virtual poked his nose in front of Alexandros on the line.
After the race, delighted trainer John Gosden advised Channel 4,
"He doesn't like Ascot, so we won't go there. Based on conversations I have had with connections prior to this race, I think we will now run Virtual in the Eclipse".
In the same conversation, Gosden indicated his Pipe Dreamer would also avoid Ascot, and would probably next be seen in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown Park in ten days time.
Tastahil gets back up to hold All the Aces.
Tastahil proved he is a tough horse to defeat in a battle. Having led for most of today's 2.05 pm Listed mile and three quarters contest at Newbury, Tastahil seemed to succumb as the classy All The Aces first came alongside, and then put his head in frontat the furlong pole, but Tastahil would not be denied, and under a strong drive from Richard Hills, he battled back, and then held on for a deserved success.
Tastahil could well be a Gold Cup prospect on ground with some cut, while All The Aces will be all the better for this first run in eleven months.
In a sad postscript to the race, Tropical Straight looked booked for third place before he sadly broke down and died within the final furlong.
Tonight's Kilbeggan meeting cancelled.
Following an inspection at Kilbeggan at 9.00 am this morning, the decision was made to cancel tonight's meeting as parts of the track were considered to be unraceable, and with further rain forecast to fall on already saturated ground, itwas considered the most prudent option was to make an early announcement of cancellation.
Monumental performance from Parthenon.
The Mark Johnston trained Parthenon has certainly come on from his Maiden win at Leopardstown and this season's Sandown Condition Stakes victory, for in last evening's Totepool Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton, he led from start to finish, and even had the stamina to kick on at the three furlong from home pole, seeing off his well regarded Ballydoyle rival Stately Home by a comfortable two and a half lengths.
Parthenon seems a progressive type, and must now be considered as a potential Group 1 winner later in the season.
Ask's ultimate target could be at the Curragh.
Having proved he can stay one mile six furlongs when winning yesterday's Yorkshire Cup at the Knavesmire, it is understood connections have pencilled in the Irish Field St Leger at the Curragh as the long term target for the Sir Michael Stoute trained six year old.
However, the way he stayed yesterday's trip on soft ground would indicate he could well figure as a Gold Cup horse over two miles on good ground.
Nashmiah could have quick return to action.
Clive Brittain has confirmed the connections of Nashmiah, who was a plucky winner under top weight of yesterday's Fillies Listed race at York, could authorise her to run in next week's Boylesports Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh. In an interview, Brittain was reported as saying,
"If she comes out of this race with no ill effects, it is quite likely she could line up at the Curragh next week".
Great Leighs 2010 fixtures now seem lost.
With the news from administrators Deloitte, the sale of Great Leighs has fallen through, it now seems inevitable the BHA deadlines for 2010 fixtures will not be met, and the earliest racing could then return to the Essex track, if a future buyer can be found, would be in 2011.
Say No Now connections say yes to Goodwood.
Three year old filly Say No Now has some important entries during the remainder of the season, including the Epsom and Irish Oaks. Trainer David Lanigan has been desperate to give some racecourse experience to his Refuse To Bend filly, but her narrow win on a sound surface at Nottingham earlier in the season proved to connections she needs some cut, so although she is entered in this week's Listed Height of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood, her trainer has his fingers crossed for some rain over Goodwood prior to Wednesday's race.
If all goes according to plan on Wednesday, Say No Now will then go forward to the 'Classic' which offers her the best possibility of suitable ground, and the current weather conditions are making an appointment in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh her most likely option.
Scenic Shot hits the target in Doomben Cup.
In a real head to head thriller in the final furlong of the ten furlong Group 1Doomben Cup, Scenic Shot last night just nosed his way in front of five time Group 1 winner Racing To Win in front of a good crowd at Doomben racecourse in Brisbane.
