Southwell offering free admission.

Godsden to be double handed for Lincoln.

John Gosden is reported to be so happy with the training progress of Expresso Star and Charm School, he is confident both of them will line up in this year's William Hill sponsored Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster on Saturday week.

Grand National News.

Following his first fence fall at Kelso, Donald McCain has decided to give Cloudy Lane a racecourse gallop before this year's Aintree Grand National.

Meanwhile, Simon, who was very disappointing at Cheltenham last week, has been scratched from participation in both the Grand National and the Bet 365 Chase at Sandown.

Realising the current economic hardships facing many racing fans, Southwell have decided to allow all tomorrow's race-goers free entry to their afternoon fixture. If you need any further details, please contact the racecourse.

Newmarket on Strangles Alert.

Strangles is a highly infectious desease which causes the glands in a horses head to swell, and in some cases the glands can become infected, and form abscesses which migrate into other parts of the horse's body, where they can become fatal.

So, when the news broke this weekend, William Jarvis has a horse infected with Strangles in his Newmarket stables, the whole veterinarian establishment in Newmarket swung into action. The infected horse, along with other possibly infected horses, have been the subject of quarantine, and the whole yard is subject to disinfection and isolation procedures.

With the flat season just around the corner, it is to be hoped no cross infection has taken place on the Newmarket gallops, as the potential outcome could be devastating to an industry already suffering from the downturn in the world economy.

Silver Birch disappoints!

It is back to the drawing board for Silver Birch's trainer Robbie Elliot, for after a couple of useful point to point outings, the 2007 Aintree Grand National winner was very disappointing, and only had one horse behind him at the end of yesterday's Slane Handicap Hurdle at Navan.

Based on this evidence, Silver Birch has little chance if he competes in this year's Aintree Grand National, but as he is a twelve year old, the trainer may feel he has no option but to give him a chance of regaining his title in April's race.

Petition against BBC cuts goes out to the betting shops.

With the bookmaking firms joining the protest against cuts in the BBC's coverage of horse racing, from today, punters using the UK's 8,500 betting shops will have the chance to put their names to the petition against the BBC's proposed cuts in horse racing coverage.

If like most of us, you enjoy viewing horse racing on terrestrial television, we encourage you to put your name to this campaign, as the BBC is answerable to its license fee payers, and if enough of us protest, it could make the BBC's Board of Governors think again about the proposed swinjing cuts in future horse racing coverage.

Bet Fred's supremo Fred Dunn is so proactive in trying to get the BBC to change its mind over cuts, he is also offering on-line punters the chance to sign up to the petition on-line at www.betfred.com.

Moskova the highlight of Russell treble.

Jockey Davy Russell followed up a good week at Cheltenham by riding a treble at yesterday's Limerick meeting.

The highlight was undoubtedly his victory on the Paul Nolan trained Moskova. Searching for better ground, the mare ran wide of her field throughout the two miles six furlongs of the Grade 3 Dawn Run Mares Hurdle, but towards the end of the race, when asked to quicken by Russell, the mare soon responded, running out a five and a half length victor of her contest.

After the race, Paul Nolan indicated he would step his charge up to three miles for races he has targeted at the Fairyhouse and Punchestown Festivals.

Walsh reflects on Cheltenham.

Having had some time to reflect on his record breaking week at Cheltenham, Ruby Walsh has lauded Kauto Star as a horse who comes along once in a lifetime. The jockey also believes the nine year old will be the horse to beat for at least the next two years.

Speaking about the Royal and Sun Alliance Chase winner Cooldine, Walsh said, "he is a fast improving type, but he will have to improve if he is to challenge Kauto Star in next year's Cheltenham Gold Cup".

However, Walsh did give Cooldine's trainer Willie Mullins some good news, for he believes Quevega, the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle winner, and Mikael D'Haguenet, the Ballymore Properties Hurdle winner, are both outstanding prospects who should win plenty of hurdle races before going on to tackle fences.

Old Fashioned result upsets Kentucky Derby market.

The previously unbeaten Old Fashioned, who was the strong anti post favourite for the Kentucky Derby, suffered a shock defeat on Saturday at Oaklawns Park racecourse in Arkansas.

Leading coming into the stretch, the two to five favourite was suprised by a late winning run by fifty seven to one outsider Win Willy. Needless to say, the defeat has thrown the Kentucky Derby betting market into unexpected turmoil.
