View puts in good piece of public work.

Rainbow view, who is the current favourite for both the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas and the Epsom Oaks, put in a smart piece of work over six and a half furlongs prior to the start of racing at the first day of the Newmarket Craven meeting.

Spectators and pundits alike were impressed, and although the filly got warm before she started her gallop, this is quite normal, and did not effect her performance on the track in any way.

However, as mentioned below, in the Nell Gwyn Stakes, Fantasia was very impressive, and battles between these two quality fillies could be the hallmark of this upcoming season.

Redwood gives Barry Hills another landmark.

For the second time in the afternoon, trainer Barry Hills and son Michael teamed up to score at Newmarket. This time, jockey Michael made a beautifully timed run on Redwood to seize the initiative in today's Listed Fielden Stakes as the runners entered the Newmarket dip, and no matter how hard Johnnie Murtagh tried on Drum Beat, he could not catch Redwood, who provided Barry Hills with his three hundredth winner at Newmarket.

Fantasia is fantastic!

Being hacked along at the back of today's Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket, Frankie Dettori obviously knew what he had under him, for when he asked Fantasia to quicken at the one and a half furlong point, she responded by turning the race into a procession with half a furlong to spare.

Based on this performance, Fantasia is a top draw filly who could well win her target of the French 1,000 Guineas.

Ouqba lands European Free handicap.

Barry Hills continued his excellent start to the season when his son Michael Hills rode Ouqba to success in today's European Free Handicap at headquarters.

Always up with the pace, Ougba continued to lenthen when asked, and favourite A Winners Game, and Penny's Gift from the in form Richard Hannon stable, had to settle for the minor honours in today's contest.

Venetia Williams strikes againg.

As she proved with Mon Mome in the Aintree Grand National, Venetia Williams has her horses in top form during the current national hunt spring campaign, and A TouchBetween Akara jumped and galloped his rivals into the ground in today's Grade 2 Silver Trophy at Cheltenham.

From Dawn to Dusk travels powerfully throughout.

The money spoke in today's two mile four and a half furlong hurdle at Cheltenham, as From Dawn To Dusk travelled well throughout the race, and took it up readily two hurdles from home. Despite wandering to the inside rail on the run in, the winner was never in danger from runner up South of the Border.

Nehaan gives Gosden another winner.

In today's first running of the Tattersalls Timeform Three Year Old Listed race at Newmarket, the John Gosden trained Nehaan was always up with the pace, as was runner up Moniter Closely, and both made the best of there way home. The first two look useful three year olds, but favourite Liberation was very disappointing despite being ideally placed prior to the last two furlongs of today's contest.

The Aidan O'Brien trained Rockhampton did his best work towards the end of his run, and managed a creditable third, but he looks the sort who will show his best work in the middle of the season.

Boy Chuck steals second race at Cheltenham.

Under an enterprising ride from Richard Johnson, Boy Chuck took it up a mile from home in today's extended three mile one furlong handicap at Cheltenham. Having established a ten length lead at one stage, the other runners could not gather Boy Chuck in, and he ran on to score his first victory since November 2006.

Monsieur Chevalier impressive in debut.

With the Brocklesby winner Hearts of Fire well back in fourth, Richard Hughes only had to shake Monsieur Chevalier up to land the odds in today's first race of the Craven meeting. He looks a useful sort who will progress, and he should certainly get six furlongs in due course.

Torpichen dismal as Toshiba triumphs in first.

Despite the accompaniment of champion jockey A P McCoy, Torpichen disappointed again at Cheltenham, and played no part in the finish. The Nicky Henderson trained Toshiba took it up three hurdles from home, and apart from the late run of Mountaineer, he never had an opponent within four lengths during the latter part of the race.

Goodish ground for first day of Craven meeting.

To ensure good ground for the first day of their Craven meeting, officials at Newmarket have used watering where necessary, and the ground is now described as generally good with the odd firm patch.

Ground rules out Voy Por Ustedes participation.

With no cut available in the ground at Cheltenham, connections of Voy Por Ustedes have decided against a run in today's ESN Silver Trophy.

There is still a possibility the leader of this year's national hunt Order of Merit could run in the Celebration Chase at Sandown, but it is unlikely, and it would seem the summer paddocks are the preferred option.

Hayley hoping to obtain media job.

With the unfortunate news she has been ruled out from riding until March of next year, Hayley Turner is hoping to secure a ten month attachment to one of the racing programmes. Without wishing to sound chauvanistic, Hayley would make a much more attractive pundit than some of the present incumbents. Add to that the fact she is clever and articulate, we anticipate she will have no bother in being snapped up by one of the networks.

Want to own a Scottish National entrant?

Following today's race meeting at Cheltenham, Brightwells are holding a sale of national hunt horses at the course, and the most interesting lot may well be West End Rocker.

Well fancied for this Saturday's Coral Scottish Grand National, West End Rocker is Alan King's only entrant since the withdrawal of Halcon Genelardais, but the trainer believes the trip and his good handicap mark make him a live prospect for Saturday's Grade 3 contest. So it will be interesting to see how keen the bidding becomes for this lot at tonight's sale.

Free Agent will be prepared for Derby.

As a seasonal debut, the Queen's Free Agent is to be run in either the Sandown Classic Trial or the Dante Stakes at York, and subject to a satisfactory performance, the three year old will then go to Epsom for the Derby.

Northern Racing owners increase stake in Arena Leisure.

David and Simon Reuben, the owners of Northern Racing are reported to have increased their shareholding in Arena Leisure, themselves the owners of seven british racecourses. With a shareholding now in excess of twenty six per cent, the Reubens now have the ability to block special resolutions from other shareholders, and they have the necessary foothold to launch a take-over bid should they seek to do so in the future.

Crowds buck the economic trend.

It would seem no matter what the prevailing economic conditions, the public are determined to enjoy their horse racing, for all the bank holiday venues are reporting this year's weekend crowds were comparible, if not better, than last year's Easter holiday attendances.

This on-going rebuttal of the 'doom sayers' forecasts for the current year is good news for horseracing, and with concerted effort, and less public disagreements from all concerned, the industry could come out of the current recession stronger than ever.

Ground no problem for Tricky Trickster.

Novice chaser Tricky Trickster was the subject of a sustained gamble yesterday for the Coral Scottish Grand National, and this may have been based on comments from trainer Nigel Twiston Davies, as in a Racing Post interview he assured punters his charge will cope with good ground,

"He would not like it firm, but I understand from Ayr officials the ground on Saturday will be no worse than good, and this gives us every chance".

Hannon aims Soul City at Irish Guineas.

Richard Hannon has confirmed his Goffs Millions winner Soul City has been slow to come to hand during his spring warm-up, so the trainer has decided to give the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas a miss, and instead His three year old will undergo a home gallops based training programme aimed at preparation for the Boylesports Irish Guineas on 23 May.
