Oxx smiling after weekend Arc Trials.

Stable staff close to John Oxx say he has a quiet smile on his face after taking in this last weekend's Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe Trials - and no one can blame him!

From what we have seen over the last few days, if the going at Longchamp in early October remains no worse than good, then there appears to be little opposition to Sea The Stars completing another Group 1 success in Europe's leading mile and a half race, and thereby crowning himself as one of the greatest race horses of all time.

But be assured, anyone who knows John Oxx will tell you, he will not be over confident, and if Sea The Stars does line up at Longchamp at the start of the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, he will be 100% fit, and at the top of his form.

Murtagh takes a rest!

It seems the fall he suffered at Dundalk last week had more effect on Johnnie Murtagh than first thought, for after a very busy few days, the Ballydoyle number one jockey has decided to take the rest of this week off in an attempt to get his body back to full fitness ahead of another busy period of racing later this month.

Musselburgh add extra race.

Due to the large number of entries for the Tote Placepot Handicap, the first race on today's card at Musselburgh, the race has been split into two divisions, and this means today's meeting now features eight races instead of seven. Today's last race will now take place at 5.50 pm instead of 5.20 pm.

Yeats may go for Breeders Cup Marathon.

The soft ground at the Curragh may have stopped Yeats in his tracks during Saturday's Irish Field St Leger, but Aidan O'Brien is intimating he may allow his four time Ascot Gold Cup winner to compete on the likely faster ground at Santa Anita for this year's Breeders Cup Marathon.

Yeats has never raced in the United States, and with nothing left to prove, his participation in the BC Marathon can only produce a great deal of spectator interest in the event, and this would be most welcome to the organisers of the California based horseracing extravaganza.

Competitive entry for Mill Reef Stakes.

At today's five day decleration stage fourteen interesting two year olds still remain involved in Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury.

Irish trainer Tracy Collins seems keen to test her unbeaten recent Round Tower Stakes winner Arctic against some top opposition, and Richard Hannon's Fairyhouse Tattersalls Million Sales Race victor Dick Turpin certainly fits into that catagory, while the apparent Hannon second string Angel Pursuit was a good winner at last week's Doncaster St Leger Meeting.

Brian Meehan's Radio Head was a fast finishing third against older horses in York's Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes, while the other unexposed pick would be William Haggas's progressive Ascot and Chester winner Quarrel.

If either Arctic or Dick Turpin maintain their unbeaten record in the Mill Reef, then the successful juvenile is likely to move to the head of the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas market.

Charlton in no hurry over next Clowance target.

Roger Charlton was understandably delighted with Clowance's battling second to Alandi in Saturday's Irish Field St Leger, for after nearly fifteen months off the race track, to come so close to winning a Classic was no mean achievement.

Charlton now wants to see how his filly comes out of the race before he makes any future plans, but if all is alright, he intends to give her at least two more outings in top class european races before the end of the year.

Doncaster to lobby BHA for extra Group 1 race.

The Doncaster racecourse executive have announced they are to lobby the BHA to grant them an extra Group 1 race to be staged during the future four day St Leger Meetings to be held at the Town Moor course.

The executive believe improving the standard of the races on the Leger Meeting programme will enhance the quality of the horses being entered, and this should attract bigger and better sponsers and larger crowds to Doncaster's flagship fixture.

Lynan hopeful Duff will obtain Hong Kong invitation.

Now having to carry a Group 2 penalty after his narrow victory in Saturday's Park Stakes at Doncaster, Edward Lynam is not keen to allow Duff to take up his option in the Diodem Stakes a week on Saturday. Indeed, Lynam is now hopeful Duff has done enough to warrant an invitation to the Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin racecourse in December,

"Duff would find it difficult under a penalty in races in Britain or Ireland during the remainder of the season, but he would get the mile around the tight turns at Sha Tin very well, and off level weights he would have a good chance in the Hong Kong Mile, so we will speak with people in the far east and see what can be arranged."

Cheveley Park outing for Sand Vixen.

By setting a juvenile track record over the five furlong course in last Friday's Group 3 Flying Childers Stakes, the Godolphin owned and trained Sand Vixen has earned herself a crack at the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on 02 October.

Markab given break before Group 3 attempt.

Henry Candy believes Markab's sixteenth of twenty two in Saturday's Portland Handicap at Doncaster was too bad to be true, and the trainer thinks it may indicate Markab was suffering from the initial stages of a virus which has affected his yard over the past two weeks. As a precaution, the handler has confirmed Markab will now have a month off from racing, by-passing this next weekend's Ayr Gold Cup in favour of a run in the Group 3 Wilmott Dixon Piers Bengough Memorial Stakes at Ascot in October.

Stimulation could make rapid return to action.

After an enforced absence of eleven months from racing due to injury problems, trainer Hughie Morrison was delighted with Stimulation's effort in Saturday's Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster, and the handler is said to be considering giving his four year old a rapid return to the track in this Friday's Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup at Newbury. Speaking yesterday, Morrison said,

"I was delighted with his performance at Doncaster, but I don't understand why he was made favourite for the Park Stakes, because I told everyone who would listen he would need two or three runs to put him right.

I have no worries about him going back to the mile trip, and we will decide on Friday whether he lines up at Newbury, particularly as we have the Prix Foret as another option."

Kasbah Bliss shows he is back to form.

Having won emphatically at Haydock Park over hurdles earlier this year, Francois Doumen's dual purpose five year old Kasbah Bliss was frankly disappointing in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham back in March, but at Longchamp yesterday, he showed he is back to form on the flat, coming with a late run to snatch the Group 3 Prix Gladiateur for the second successive year.

Doumen was delighted with his charge's three quarter of a length win over Pointillist, and the handler indicated Kasbah Bliss would return to Longchamp for the Prix du Cadran on Arc Day - a race in which he is likely to face Irish Field St Leger winner Alandi.

Doumen yesterday confirmed, only after he has completed the above run on the flat will consideration be given to any hurdling targets during the upcoming national hunt season.

Hong Kong Vase ultimate goal for Halicarnassus.

Following his excellent win in the Group 2 Bospherus Cup in Turkey, Mick Channon is considering giving Halicarnassus an outing in this weekend's Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial at Newbury. The trainer has earmarked the Hong Kong Vase as the ultimate goal for his fast ground performer, and providing the track at Newbury does not become too soft, Channon believes the quality race against good opposition could provide good preparation for the intended trip to Hong Kong later this year.

Berry hopeful of return to form by Looks Busy.

Alan Berry's Temple Stakes winner Looks Busy was a disappointing seventh of seven in her last outing in the Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh, but after the race it was discovered she had been struck into during the Group 3 contest, and the Lancashire based handler is confident his filly will show her true form in this coming Saturday's Group 3 Dubai Duty Free World Trophy at Newbury.
