Cavalryman wins Grand Prix de Paris.

Sheikh Mohammed's relationship with Andre Fabre is certainly bearing fruit, as this evening the pair saw their Cavalryman land the Group One Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp.

Aidan O'Brien had to settle for second place with Age of Aquarius, with Godolphin's Italian Derby winner Mastery taking the third place in today's mile and a half unofficial French Derby.

Sea The Stars will miss King George.

As we predicted over the weekend, Sea The Stars is to by-pass the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

In a statement this afternoon, trainer John Oxx confirmed his treble Group One winner will miss the Ascot mile and a half engagement in favour of a probable run in the Group One Juddmonte International Stakes over ten furlongs at York's Ebor Meeting in August.

Colonial boosts his reputation.

The Andre Fabre trained Colonial followed up on his recent five length Chantilly victory by landing today's Listed seven furlong Prix Roland de Chambure in impressive style at Longchamp. Always in command, he put in a burst at the half way stage, and ended up winning in clever style by two and a half lengths from American Nizzy, with Forestry a further three lengths further back in third place.

Ouqbaa to face older opposition for the first time.

The very progressive Ouqbaa, winner of this year's Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot, is to face older opposition for the first time in the Betfair Cup at Glorious Goodwood on 28 July. Already a double winner over seven furlongs, the fact trainer Barry Hills is keeping him at this distance for his first clash with older opposition indicates the veteran trainer is comfortable his three year old can compete against the best at what appears to be his optimum trip.

Noseda hoping for more success.

Jeremy Noseda has today confirmed his Darley July Cup winner Fleeting Spirit will next run in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York on 21 August.

"She had a few cuts and bruises after the July Cup, but we should be able to get her back into full action in the next ten days, and while she is in tip top form, the Nunthorpe seems the sensible option".

With regard to Bunbury Cup runner up Captain Brilliance, Noseda commented,

"We are very happy with him, and he has come out of Newmarket in fine form. The plan is to go to Ascot for the International Mile, and we are hopeful Johnnie Murtagh will be available for the ride".

Royal Hunt Cup winner Forgotten Voice is due to put his credentials on the line this Thursday evening when he steps out of handicap company for the first time in the Clumber Park Hotel and Spa Conditions Stakes over a mile on Doncaster's Town Moor course. Speaking about the run, Noseda said,

"A very good performance on Thursday evening could persuade us to have a crack at the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, but initially we would just like him to come home sound".

Youmzain to wear first time visor.

Mick Channon's ever consistant Group One middle distance performer Youmzain is said to have taken well to a first time visor when undertaking some home work under jockey Sam Hitchcock, and the trainer is keen for his old campaigner to wear the head gear for the first time in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on 25 July.

Knot In Wood to go for hat trick.

Richard Fahey has today confirmed recent Group 3 Chipchase Stakes winner Knot In Wood will line-up at Hamilton Park this Friday evening in an attempt to land his third consecutive John Smiths sponsored Scottish Stewards Cup.

Having landed the corresponding first prizes in 2007 and 2008, plus having racked up two other wins at Hamilton, Knot In Wood has a proven track record over the six furlong course at the Scottish racecourse, and connections believe, with a clear run, he will take all the beating in this year's contest.

Providing he comes out of Friday's race with no problems, Richard Fahey expects his tough campaigner to then line-up in the Stewards Cup at Glorious Goodwood on 01 August.

Flynn planning Market Rasen raid.

Former jockey turned trainer Paul Flynn is aiming to use Archie Boy to raid this coming Saturday's Listed Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen. A winner of his last three outings over fences, Flynn believes his Irish based challenger has the speed necessary to land a good prize over the smaller obstacles, and any support in the pre-race market would suggest a potential coup is expected.

Leopardstown or York for Jukebox Jury.

Following his improved run when finishing sixth in the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park, connections of Jukebox Jury have decided his next outing will either be in the Meld Stakes at Leopardstown on 23 July, or the Skybet Group 2 Stakes at York on 26 July.

One of the leading lights of last year's juvenile campaign, Jukebox Jury had an injury interupted start to the current season, and then finished last of seven at Longchamp in June.

However, his reasonable performance in the Eclipse suggests he is on the road to full recovery, and certainly trainer Mark Johnston is hopeful he will progress as the season unfolds.

Hannon hopeful over Monsieur Chevaliere.

Speaking today about his main hope for this coming Saturday's Whetherbys Supersprint at Newbury, trainer Richard Hannon has confirmed Monsieur Chevaliere has fully recovered from the bumping and boring he received during his run in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, and the handler is expecting his charge to be amongst the principals when the runners enter the final stages of Saturday's five furlong contest at Newbury.

Holberg to miss the rest of the season.

Having trained Holberg to win the Queens Vase at Royal Ascot, Mark Johnston had assumed he would be losing the promising prospect to the main Godolphin operation, but a scan of a leg injury has now ruled Holberg out for the rest of the season, and with no chance of taking part in the St Leger in 2009, it seems the three year old will be left with Johnston, in the hope he can be rehabilitated to undertake a four year old campaign during 2010.

Royal County Star Galway Plate participation dependant on Deutschland.

Having got the better of Knight Legend in a titanic struggle over the run-in to last evening's Summerfest Chase at Killarney, Royal County Star's participation in the Galway Plate at the end of the month is now dependant on Willie Mullins keeping top weight Deutschland amongst the entries for the Galway centrepiece. Speaking after last night's victory, Royal County Star's trainer Tony Martin said,

"My lad will currently have to carry 11 stone 7 pounds, but that is dependant on Deutschland staying at the top of the weights. If he were to be withdrawn, I would probably look for another option for Royal County Star, as he is handicapped pretty much to his limit as it is".

Harbinger likely to return in Gordon Stakes.

The well regarded Harbinger is reported to have fully recovered from the muscle pull which negateed his participation in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, and he is now expected to line-up for his first run since May in the Betfair Gordon Stakes on the first day of Glorious Goodwood.

A good winner at Chester, Harbinger could at this stage be the most unexposed horse of the Classic generation, but if he is to come into contention for the major prizes at the latter end of the flat season, he will have to step up and confirm his potential with a good run in the Gordon Stakes.

Ayr need to renew confidence in track safety.

Although Joe Fanning will miss Glorious Goodwood with a broken collar bone, and the racehorse Balweriae is in the Glasgow veterinarian hospital with a broken jaw, thankfully none of the jockeys or horses involved in yesterday's slips and falls on the home turn at Ayr have life threatening injuries.

However, one cannot help but note, this is the third such incident at Ayr in the last four years, and it brings us to this one conclusion - Irrespective of underlying weather conditions, the section of the racecourse on the home turn, and the whole section across the straight course to the inside rail at the start of the main home straight should have full scale remedial groundwork repair, including new deep drainage facilities.

The racecourse executive may argue this is an unnecessary expense during hard economic times, but if they do not undertake this work in the near future, they could find trainers and jockeys refusing to enter the numerous upcoming fixtures at Ayr, and a lack of good horses and jockeys will soon have a negative effect on crowd figures.

An immediate announcement about impending remedial work will calm nerves all round, and who knows, the actual work could help to save lives in the long run.

Unless he is Teflon coated - Karl Burke should brace himself.

Following fines and suspensions for jockeys Darren Williams and Fergal Lynch, The British Horseracing Authority yesterday handed former owner and gambler Miles Rodgeres a lifetime ban from horseracing, but all eyes are now turning to the judgement to be handed down to trainer Karl Burke.

With the other three parties involved in the recent race fixing enquiry having been found in breach of the rules of racing, unless Burke has Teflon coated alibi's and excuses for his role in proceedings, it seems inevitable he will face a ban from horseracing, and with such a high profile stable, the length of his ban could determine his very future in the sport.

Cima could join Imbongi at Arlington.

Luca Cumani is reportedly not keen to enter Cima de Triomphe against either Conduit or Sea The Stars in the Ascot running of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and like Mike de Kock with Imbongi, Cumani is considering sending his Sandown winner to America for the Arlington Million on 08 August.

Egan to switch to Ireland.

Now a family man, jockey John Egan has decided to spend more time with his family in Eire, so he will now spend most of his time riding in Irish racing, with occasional forrays across the Irish Sea, as and when good rides are available in Britain.
