Top Class Oscar performance from Walsh.
For half of today's Citroen Novices Hurdle at Fairyhouse, Ruby Walsh looked to have a difficult job to keep his mount Oscar Dan Dan interested in proceedings, and when favourite Caim Hill went on by seven lengths, it looked a one horse race. But being the professional he certainly is, Ruby Walsh started to get a good response from Tom Mullins's seven year old, and at the last obstacle Oscar Dan Dan was upsides the leader. From that point on, with a Grade 2 prize on offer, there was only going to be one winner, and Ruby completed a superb ride by going on to victory.
Carberry continues his great return from injury.
Having already secured a couple of high profile winners at this year's Fairyhouse Festival, Paul Carberry continued his fantastic return from a punctured lung when scoring in this afternoon's Grade 3 Weatherby's GSB Hurdle on The Fist of God.
For a major part of the race Flag of Honour had set a good pace, but approaching the last, he was challenged by Carberry on The Fist of God and the race favourite Coffee Tea or Me. The latter two went on, with Carberry prevailing by a length and a quarter, with Flag of Honour staying on for third, half a length behind runner up Coffee Tea or Me.
Hayley sidelined until next year.
Having today had a meeting with the BHA chief medical officer Doctor Michael Turner, jockey Hayley Turner has been advised she cannot re-apply for her jockey's licensen til next year. Having looked at the results of various recent tests, the doctor has come to the conclusion it would be safer for Hayley to have a minimum twelve month recouperation from the head injuries she suffered on the Newmarket gallops on 03 March of this year.
Hayley, who was accompanied at today's meeting by the Professional Jockey's Association doctor, Anna-Louise Mackinnon, is naturally disappointed at the outcome, but subject to on-going medical advise, she has declared her intention to re-apply for her license at the earliest opportunity, that being on 03 March 2010.
As a sign of good faith, bookmaking firms Coral and Ladbrokes announced this afternoon, they would be reimbursing all clients who had placed bets on Hayley Turner's possible achievements during the current calendar year.
O'Connor out of intensive care.
We are glad to report this afternoon, Matt O'Connor, who suffered serious head injuries when falling at Thurles back in March, has been moved out of intensive care at Cork University Hospital.
The road to full recovery for Colm Murphy's stable jockey will no doubt be long and hard, but it is great to know he has taken the first step!
Newbury entry a 'back-up' plan.
Brian Meehan has clarified his entry for Delegator in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury is a precautionary measure, and his colt's first target is the Craven Stakes at Newmarket.
"We have given him the Greenham entry in case he suffers a minor set-back prior to this Thursday's race, but the Craven is his first priority".
At today's forty eight hour decleration stage, it would appear Delegator will now have to face seven rivals in Thursday's race.
Leading fancies to gallop before racing.
It has been confirmed, leading 1,000 Guineas fancies Rainbowview and Serious Attitude are to have a racecourse gallop before racing commences at tomorrow's first day of the three day Newmarket Craven meeting.
This spin should give the public and the pundits alike a good opportunity to look at the state of readiness of the market leaders for next month's Classic.
Lord Shanakill will go to Newbury.
Karl Burke has confirmed last year's Mill Reef Stakes winner Lord Shanakill will have his three year old seasonal debut in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.
Overnight rain prevents watering.
Officials at Fairyhouse had intended to water the course for today's third day of the Easter Festival, but overnight rain has brought a natural solution to maintaining the good ground conditions for today's fixture.
Two unfortunate deaths in yesterday's Irish National.
Jonjo O'Neill and Tony Martin are both reported to be upset at their respective losses in yesterday's Powers Irish Grand National on the second day of the Fairyhouse Easter Festival.
Jonjo's dual Cheltenham Festival winner Wichita Limeman was killed outright as a result of a horrendous fall at the very first fence, and Tony Martin's Drumconvis had to be euthanised after breaking a shoulder when falling at the twelth fence.
Both horses had put in great runs at this year's Cheltenham Festival, with Tony McCoy's win on Wichita Lineman being hailed as one of the rides of the season, while Drumconvis was only denied by Tricky Trickster in the four mile contest.
Racingsight wish to send their commiserations to the various connections on the loss of two quality horses from the national hunt ranks.
Notra Pere doubtful runner in Scottish National.
Although Jim Dreaper immediately declared Notra Pere for this Saturday's Coral Scottish Grand National following his withdrawal from yesterday's Powers Irish Grand National, it is unlikely he will line up for the Grade 3 contest.
Notra Pere was scratched yesterday because the ground conditions were too firm for the Welsh Grand National winner, and if the weather forecast is correct, insufficient rain will fall at Ayr this week to ease the ground sufficiently for Notra Pere to take his chance on Saturday. In fact, Jim Dreaper is already mooting his charge is more likely to go to either Sandown for the Bet 365 Chase, or Punchestown for the Guinness Gold Cup, dependant on which venue can offer the softer ground conditions required for Notra Pere to show his best.
Chapoturgen will try to reinvigarate his reputation.
Having put in a faultless round to win the Jewson Novices Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, Chapoturgeon fell at the first fence on his reappearance at Aintree, but it is understood connections are to give him the opportunity to reinvigarate his jumping reputation with a run in this Saturday's Future Champion Chase at Ayr. Although a relatively flat course, the fences at Ayr are quite tough, and Chapoturgeon will have to recapture his Cheltenham form if he is to prove he can be a top class chaser in next year's senior ranks.
Newbury running plans.
Sariska has been well supported of late for the 1,000 Guineas, but her run in Saturday's Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury will determine whether she takes her chance in the Newmarket Classic, or whether Saturday's result necessitates a preparationd for a serious attempt at the Epsom Oaks.
Sir Michael Stoute's Spanish Moon has already had a run in Dubai this spring, so he should be race fit for his proposed run in Saturday's John Porter Stakes.
Channon keen on Dunes Queen.
Trainer Mick Channon is always optimistic about his Pattern race runners, but he is exuding more than the average amount of confidence about Dunes Queen prior to her run in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes tomorrow.
If she wants to be victorius at Newmarket, there is the small problem of defeating the highly rated Fantasia in tomorrow's race, but if she does achieve this objective, Channon could have a live prospect for this year's 1,000 Guineas.
Cumani believes Presvis is ready to strike at the highest level.
In an interview today, Luca Cumani has insisted Presvis is developing into a Group 1 winning horse, and he is confident his charge will go close in the Audemars Pinguet Q E II Stakes at Sha Tin later this month.
