Cavalryman holds off Beheshtam in Prix Neil.

Andre Fabre's Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Cavalryman held off a late challenge from the Aga Khan owned Beheshtam to land today's Group 2 Prix Neil on Arc Trial day at Longchamp.

The early part of the race had been run very steadily until leader Aizavoski kicked off the home turn and stole a few lengths on his rivals, but Frankie Dettori was quickly wise to the move, and drove Cavalryman up to take the lead half a furlong from home, and his mount proved he had more in reserve as he held off the late challenge of the Jean-Claude Rouget trained Beheshtam.

Dar re mi loses Prix Vermielle in the stewards room.

Having already won the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks in her last two races, John Gosden must have thought his Dar re mi had scored her third successive Group 1 when her late powerful run demoted the unbeaten three year old filly Stacelita to second place in the final stages of today's Prix Vermielle at Longchamp. But the French stewards had other ideas, and after reviewing the race, they found Dar re mi had interfered with Soberiana as she burst through the pack, and Gosden's filly was demoted to fifth with Stacelita being awarded the race.

Well the records may show Stacelita as unbeaten, but on the day she was no match for a much improved Dar re mi, and the moral victory is certainly with Gosden's filly.

Spanish Moon lights up Prix Foy.

Due to a couple of rowdy performances at the starting stalls, Sir Michael Stoute's Spanish Moon is banned from racing in Britain until November, but with his all the way victory in today's Prix Foy he was impeccable from start to finish, and showed how much British spectators are missing by his absence on the western side of the English Channel.

Given a superb ride by Ryan Moore, Spanish Moon controlled the pace, and kept plenty in reserve to see off a somewhat disappointing late challenge by race favourite Vision D'Etat.

Speaking after the race, owner Prince Khalid Abdullah's spokesperson Teddy Grimthorpe commented,

"Spanish Moon is certainly progressive, and the Arc de Triomphe is a possibility, but there are also some excellent prizes available in Canada, Hong Kong and the far east, so we will now take the time to speak to Sir Michael and then make a plan for the rest of the year."

War Artist back on track for Prix de L'Abbaye.

The James Eustace trained six year old sprinter War Artist has had his problems with injury over the past two years, but after winning a pattern race over six furlongs in Germany last month, he proved he is still a force to be reckoned with over the five furlong minimum trip as he collared Stern Opinion in the last half furlong of today's Group 3 Prix du Petit Couvert at Longchamp.

It was only Eustace's second runner at the Paris circuit, and in an interview after today's successful raid, the trainer laid out his future plans,

"War Artist is now returning to the Group 1 winning form he showed in South Africa earlier in his career, and providing he shows no ill effects from today's race, I expect we will be back at Longchamp for the Prix de L'Abbaye at the beginning of October."

Solonaway success for Border Patrol.

Having Taken the lead at around the furlong pole in today's Solonaway Stakes at the Curragh, the Roger Charlton trained three year old Border Patrol showed he has stamina and determination, for he held off a determined and sustained challenge from Aidan O'Brien's much improved Poet to land his first Group 3 success.

Charlton was full of praise for Border Patrol after the race,

"He had to work very hard to make it four in a row, but he has impressed us with the way he has battled and improved all season. I would think he will make up into a Group 1 horse in due course, and next year's Lockinge Stakes at Newbury will be our probable long term target."

Snaefell suited by first time blinkers.

Fitted with blinkers for the first time in today's Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh, the Michael Halford trained Snaefell loved the underfoot cut offered by the Curragh, and under an excellently timed ride by partner Fran Berry, he powered two and a half lengths clear of runner up Girouette in the last fifty yards of today's Group 3 contest.

Kingsfort to be rested ahead of 2010 campaign.

While adding yesterday's Vincent O'Brien National Stakes to his CV, Kingsfort ensured he remained unbeaten in his two races this season. Having triumphed in a Group 1 on testing going at the Curragh, connections are keen not to overface the juvenile, so the decision has been made to put him away for the winter, in the hope he will develop into a Classic winning three year old.

Explaining the decision, trainer Kevin Prendergast said,

"It was a tough race on testing ground yesterday, and with juveniles it is too easy to give them too much racing. Having secured a Group 1 win, we now know what we have, and the decision has been taken to allow Kingsfort to grow and strenghthen without the burden of any further racing this year. Hopefully, this strategy will produce a very competitive three year old capable of winning the major prizes in 2010."

Rockfella ensures another Scoop Six roll-over.

When 12/1 chance Rockfella landed the 3.10 pm at Goodwood, all remaining tickets in yesterday's Scoop Six Bet were lost on the fifth leg. This means both pots roll-over to next Saturday, with the Win Fund now standing on £244,589 and the Bonus Fund has accumulated to £104,824.

It is reasonable to suggest next week's combined pots will reach the magic half million pound figure, and you will be able to find the races you need to study on our news page this coming Friday.

France and America next for Chinese?

Dermot Weld has been very astute in rebuilding the confidence of his four year old filly Chinese White. A one time favourite for the 2008 Epsom Oaks, his filly frankly had a disappointing year as a three year old, but he has to be creditied for the way he has brought the filly on incrementally this season. Listed and Group 3 victories were yesterday followed by an authorititive success in the Group 2 Blandford Stakes at the Curragh, and the trainer is now looking to step up to Group 1 success in the Prix de L'Opera at Longchamp, and then possibly the Breeders Cup Mares and Fillies Turf in California.

Famous Name, who also disappointed as a three year old before being nursed back into the kind of form which last saw him finishing second to Aqlaam in the Group 1 Prix de Moulin, is another Weld trained four year old seeking a Group 1 prize before the end of the season, and the trainer is now musing over the possibility of giving his much improved charge a crack at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot later this month.

Ground to decide Heaven Sent Group 1 attempt.

Sir Michael Stoute's Heaven Sent has found the outstanding fillies Goldikova and Dar re mi too good for her this season in Group 1 company, but connections are hoping for good weather for the rest of this month, so they can give their talented filly the opportunity to show her true potential on good to firm ground in the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on 03 October. Discussing their intentions, a spokesperson for connections said,

"If any filly deserves a Group 1 win it is Heaven Sent, but she has to have fast ground, and as a result, we are hoping for an extended 'indian summer' for the remainder of September. If the ground were to come up on the soft side at Newmarket, I think it is very unlikely she will run."

Hong Kong raid on Scintillo agenda.

Richard Hannon has confirmed he is preparing Winter Derby winner Scintillo for a raid on the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin racecourse this coming December. After his victory at Lingfield, the four year old went to win a Group 2 contest at Chantilly in May, and he certainly seems to be at his best during the winter and spring months.
