Rumours suggest Fame and Glory for Champion Stakes.
Very well placed people are late this afternoon suggesting Irish Derby winner Fame and Glory will be supplemented for the Newmarket Champion Stakes at tomorrow's five day decleration stage.
Some of the leading bookmaking firms are adding creedance to this rumour by already making Fame and Glory the new anti post favourite for the Group 1 contest.
Gladiatorus gets his career back on line.
At one time rated as the best horse in the world, Gladiatorus had been renowned this season for a series of high profile flops in the Queen Anne Stakes, Prix Jacques le Marois, and the Prix du Moulin, but the Dubai Duty Free winner put all that behind him this afternoon as he trounced his rivals in the Group 1 Premio Vittorio de Capua in Milan.
Always in command, the Godolphin charge scorched clear of his rivals, winning by four and a half lengths from Win For Sure, with Rockhorse a further neck behind.
Brocklesby winner gives Eddery first Group One success.
It must be a very long time since the winner of the March running of the Brocklesby Stakes has produced a Group 1 winner in October, but that is exactly the feat achieved by Hearts of Fire when the Pat Eddery trained juvenile overcame Godolphin's Vale of York by a neck in today's Group 1 Gran Criterium in Milan.
The win gave Pat Eddery his first Group 1 success as a trainer, and bearing in mind pattern race yardstick Mata Keranjang was five lengths back in third, then Hearts of Fire may well go on to give Eddery his first three year old Group 1 winner in the 2010 flat season.
Dashing George succumbs to Treacle.
Treacle got the better of the progressive Dashing George in today's major steeplechase at Limerick. A full report can be found in tomorrow's news section.
Kinane drives Rayeni to Curragh success.
When Michael Kinane took over at the furlong pole in today's Go Racing in Kildare Waterford Testimonial Stakes, it looked like the Aga Khan owned three year old would pick up today's Listed prize with relative ease, but Willy Supple suddenly brought Luisant with a strong run and actually got his mount's head in front with a hundred yards still to cover, but Mick Kinane was in no mood to be defeated, and he rousted the John Oxx trained colt back into the lead, eventually scoring by a neck from Luisant, with Roger Charlton's Genki having to settle for third place.
Lady Lupus too strong for gallant Atasari.
In today's Listed Lanwades and Staffordstown Stud Stakes at the Curragh, the Jim Bolger trained Atasari attempted to make all, and at the two furlong pole her efforts seem to have prevailed, but Johnnie Murtagh really got to work on the Ballydoyle filly Lady Lupus, and she responded in the final furlong, getting her head in front of the tiring Atasari, and then going on to score by three quarters of a length.
Warne takes advantage of nightmare for Berties Dream.
Despite having to work seriously on his mount, Ruby Walsh must have thought he still had a chance to pick up yet another Listed Hurdle as Berties Dream approached the second last flight of today's Newenham Mulligan Novice Hurdle at Limerick, but he suddenly found the turf rushing towards him as his mount made a massive blunder, and this left Edward O'Grady's Warne to come home in supreme isolation for a facile victory.
To be fair, Warne would probably have won anyway, as Andrew Macnamara was motionless at the point where the hard working Ruby Walsh was separated from Berties Dream, and based on today's performance, Warne could give O'Grady several other good days during the upcoming national hunt season.
Josef Vana enhances his Velka Pardubicka reputation.
In a remarkable feat of training and jockeyship, the fifty seven year old Josef Vana scored his sixthe success as a jockey, and his seventh win as a trainer, when his Tiumen won today's Velka Pardubicka in the Czech Republic.
On the day, the Tiumen and Vana combination proved too strong for odds on favourite Lakreg, who was going for his third consecutive victory in the ultimate cross country race, while Numero Due ran on to secure third position.
Zacinto swerves Champion date for Breeders Cup appointment.
Originally installed as anti post favourite for next Saturday's Champion Stakes at Newmarket, the Sir Michael Stoute trained Zacinto will now swerve the Newmarket engagement in favour of a run in the Breeders Cup Mile at the bbeginning of November.
Connections believe Zacinto is still progressing in his development, and if he can step up on his excellent second to Rip Van Winkle in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, then he will certainly be amongst the favourites to land the Grade 1 BC Mile at Santa Anita.
Mawatheeq to be supplemented into Champion Stakes field.
Marcus Tregonning has today confirmed Mawatheeq will be supplemented on Monday into next Saturday's Champion Stakes contest. Connecttions of the son of Danzig were so impressed with his recent win in the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes, they are more than prepared to pay the £30,000 supplement to enter him into next weekend's Group 1 race.
Since overcoming the virus which laid his stable low in the early part of the season, Tregonning's horses have been running'out of their skins', and the trainer is no stranger to completing a Cumberland Lodge Champion Stakes double, having been successful in the feat with Nayef in 2001.
Chapple Hyam looking forward to Coordinated attack on Racing Post.
Since obtaining his initial maiden victory at Doncaster's St Leger meeting, Peter Chapple Hyam reports Coordinated Cut has been pretty awesome in training, and after watching his juvenile complete an impressive training session on Saturday morning, the handler admitted,
"I am really looking forward to him running in the Racing Post Trophy back at Doncaster. The form of his first run has worked out very well, and he has progressed at home. I think coordinated Cut could be a very serious race horse, and I am looking forward to watching him take on the best of his generation in the Racing Post Trophy."
Gitano Hernando sees off Colonel John and Richard's Kid.
Kieran Fallon showed why he had made the trip all the way to California when executing a well gauged ride aboard Marco Botti's Gitano Hernando in Santa Anita's Goodwood Stakes. Always looking like the probable winner, the son of Hernando scored by a neck from Colonel John, with Richard's Son a further three quarter's of a length back in third. The victory ensured Gitano Hernando now has an automatic entry in the Breeders Cup Classic.
Kentucky Derby winner Mind That Bird could only muster sixth place in Saturday's nine furlong race, with connections blaming the inadequate trip and his enforced ten week absence from racing due to throat problems.
Zenyatta ensures Hall of Fame selection.
Ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, wonder mare Zenyatta ensured her own immortality when scoring her thirteenth consecutive victory in yesterday's Grade 1 Lady's Secret Stakes at Santa Anita. Securing victory by a length in Saturday's mile and a a half furlong contest, Zenyatta equalled the consecutive victory tally of previous wonder filly Personal Ensign, the latter filly setting her record between 1986 and 1988.
It would now take a brave person to suggest Zenyatta will not extend her record to an unprecedented fourteen consecutive successes in this year's Breeders Cup meeting in four weeks time.
Semple calling time on Belstane link.
Sixty one year old trainer Ian Semple has informed owner Gordon McDowall he wishes to hand in his racing license at the earliest opportunity, and he wants McDowall to find a younger training replacement for his Belstane Racing Stables at Carluke near Hamilton. The original occupent at Belstane, Semple retired and handed over to Linda Perratt in 2008, but the relationship between McDowall and Perratt only lasted a year, and as a stop gap, Semple stepped back into the 'breach'.
Although he has agreed to stay on until a replacement can be found, Semple now indicates the 24 - 7 lifestyle of a trainer no longer appeals to him, and he wants McDowall to find a permanent replacement as soon as possible.
Carte Diamond may bow out.
Following his lack lustre sixth in a hurdle race at Bangor on dee's Saturday meeting, trainer Brian Ellison has indicated one time Melbourne Cup hope Carte Diamond may be retired from racing.
In 2005, while training for the Melbourne Cup, Carte Diamond suffered a life threatening injury when impaling himself on an aluminium pole, and although he made a miraculous recovery, he then tore a tendon when preparing for the 2006 renewal of the Melbourne Cup. Returning to racing action in 2008, he has since run fourteen unsuccessful races on the flat, hence the reason Ellison had prepared him for his first hurdle race since pulling up in the 2005 Cheltenham Triumph Hurdle. Speaking after yesterday's disappointment, Ellison had this to say about his eight year old,
"He had been schoolling so well at home, I had expected more from him in the race. Jack Doyle said they went a bit quick for him, and maybe he needs a longer trip, but I will have to discuss the situation with the owner, for the last thing we want is for him to fade into an 'also ran', so retirement may be the best option."
