Paddy Power customer selects a four timer.

One lucky lady from Cork managed to put the first four winners of today's Cheltenham Festival together in a multi bet, and tonight she can raise the roof with a pay out from Paddy Power which with guaranteed starting prices amounts to one hundred and thirty one thousand one hundred and twenty four euros - Well done to that lady, and can I have her tips for tomorrow!

Referee, stop the contest!

If it had been a boxing match, that is what the punters would have been shouting as Quevega turned the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle into a rout.

Crusing in behind as Lucy Wadham's useful mare United led the other runners into the home straight, Willie Mullins's young mare scorched past her rivals in a matter of strides, and long before the Cheltenham Hill the race was over as a contest.

To be fair to United, she put in a good weight carrying performance to land second place in a photo finish, but the race was all about the tremendous turn off foot shown by Quevega, as she vindicated Willie Mullins's confidence when he stated the mare was his best chance of a Festival winner.

Walsh and Casey pick up bans.

Ruby Walsh and David Casey both picked up three day bans for excessive use of the whip aboard their respective mounts Celestial Halo and Jered in today's Champion Hurdle.

Third consecutive annual cross country victory for Nina.

Nina Carberry rode the perfect race on Garde Champetre in today's Glenfarclas Cross Country Challenge. Following favourite L'Ami throughout the contest, Nina latched on to the well backed favourite as both horses moved into the final straight, but realising her horse was not going as well, Miss Carberry took a wide route, and as L'Ani ran on oblivious to competition, she galvanised last year's winner after the last stuffed hurdle, and Garde Champetre's experience proved decisive as he headed a one two three for trainer Enda Bolger and owner J P Macmanus.

Binocular looks on as Punjabi clains victory.

A Nicky Henderson trained horse did win the Champion Hurdle, unfortunately for punters, it was Binocular's stable mate Punjabi at wenty two to one who claimed the spoils.

Prior to the off, Binocular and Sublimity seemed to get very warm in the preliminaries, but Binocular ran wel enough during the race to give his backers confidence. As the field entered the home straight, Celestial Halo and Punjabi had already struck for home, but Tony McCoy on Binocular seemed to have the move covered as he cruised in third place. However, after the last flight the favourite levelled out as the Cheltenham hill took it stoll, and Punjabi and Celestial Halo fought out the finish, with the older Punjabi prevailing on the day.

McCoy drives Lineman to unlikely victory.

Wichita Lineman may have been favourite for today's William Hill Trophy, but at any point in the race other than the last twenty yards, punters would have been excused for giving him no chance.

Bumping into, and mis-timing his fences, half way round the last circuit Wichita Lineman was trading at fifty nine to one on the betting exchanges to win today's race, and when Maljimar took it up just before the last fence, it seemed all over for the J P Macmanus owned horse. But after the last, that remarkable man Tony McCoy drove and bullied him back into contention, and as the line approached the favourite seemed to sprout wings as he ate up the ground between himself and the faltering Maljimar. To the absolute ecstacy of favourite backers, McCoy did enough to get home by a neck and land the odds for the punters.

Pady too tough for King.

In today's Arkle Trophy, there was early drama as favourite Tatenen fell at the third fence. Made in Taipan then made it a good pace throughout the race, but it was Barry Gerrity who made the decisive move when he sent former Cheltenham winner Forpadydeplasterer on at the second last. The other early leaders faded, and it was left to another former Cheltenham winner Kalahari King to lay down the final challenge to the leader. But Forpadydeplasterer has form over more than two miles, and he kept enough in reserve to hold on by a short head from his fast finishing british rival.

Carberry returns to land Supreme Novices on Go Native.

Despite overnight fears about his welfare, the punters launched themselves into support for the Willie Mullins trained Cousin Vinny in Cheltenham's first race. But it was the Noel Meade trained Go Native who came away with the spoils from the Supreme Novices Hurdle.

Superbly ridden by Paul Carberry, Go Native obtained a dream run around the inside of the final bend, and went to the front just before the last obstacle. Although Carberry, who was returning from a ten day injury lay off, kept him going up the Cheltenham Hill, Meadowmit put in a late charge, and almost got to Go Native, but Carberry's mount held on to victory due to the jockey's enterprise before the last hurdle.

Paddy Power warn Government of dangers of policy.

Leading independant Irish bookmakers Paddy Power have warned the Irish Government if they introduce a betting tax on to on-line gaming activity, it will certainly lead to job losses amongst the Irish bookmaking firms, or some of them may be forced to move their headquarters toother parts of the EEC, where on-line gaming taxes are not applied.

Overnight rain virtually by-passes Cheltenham.

The heavy overnight rain experienced along parts of the south coast virtually by-passed Cheltenham racecourse. Simon Claisse, the Cheltenham Clerk of the Course, has reported only two millimetres fell on the Cheltenham circuits, and the official going thismorning is good to soft, soft in places.

Naas meeting rescheduled.

The Naas meeting on Sunday 08 March, which was lost to snow, has been resheduled to take place this coming Saturday 14 March.

Mullins nominates Quevega as his best chance.

On this, the first day of Cheltenham, in a worrying move for supporters of Cousin Vinny in the Supreme Novices Hurdle, trainer Willie Mullins has nominated Quevega, who runs in the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle, as his most likely winner of the day.

Well Chief returns at the highest level.

The David Pipe trained Well Chief, who has not been seen on a race track since April 2007, is among the twelve declared runners for tomorrow's Queen Mother Champion Chase.

An outstanding two miler in his younger days, it will be very interesting to see if Well Chief has retained his ability after such a long lay off.

Tidal Bay an unlikely runner at Cheltenham.

Howard Johnson had already decided not to run Tidal Bay in tomorrow's Queen Mother Champion Chase, but news coming out of the stable suggests he will not line up for the Ryanair Chase, as connections seem more inclined to by-pass Cheltenham entirely. It is believed a run at the Aintree Grand National meeting in April is the preferred option.

Roaring Forte to miss Lincoln.

William Haggas has confirmed Roaring Forte, the ten to one joint anti post favourite for the Lincoln Handicap, is to miss the race. Speaking yesterday, the trainer indicated , although there was no injury setbacks, he was not entirely happy with the progress being made in getting his charge back to full fitness, and this meant the Lincoln, on Saturday 28 March, would probably come too soon for the horse to show his true ability.

The trainer suggested Roaring Forte would now be prepared for another big handicap later in the season.
