Godolphin colt Circumvented at Saint Cloud.

Under a strong ride from Ioritz Mendizabal, the Paul Cole trained Circumvent got the better of his three rivals in the closing stages of today's Group 3 Prix Thomas Bryon at Saint Cloud. In a blanket finish Circumvent just got the better of Silver Grey, while Godolphin's previously unbeaten Ameer had to settle for third place.

Change of mind sees Youmzain Hong Kong bound.

One of the many privileges of being a racehorse owner is you can change your mind - and just two days after saying Youmzain would not run again this year, Jaber Abdullah has decided to give his six year old a crack at the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin racecourse on 13 December.

Trainer Mick Channon is elated at the news, saying,

"I think the mile and a half course at Sha Tin is ideal for Youmzain, and I'm delighted Jaber has given us the all clear to have a go."

Kempton - Kentucky Derby connections on hold.

Due to the economic recession and the failure of Churchill Downs to obtain permission from the state legisliture to operate slot machines at the course facilities, economic constraints have forced the Churchill Downs executive to suspend the Kempton Park initiative they started earlier this year. This means the Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes, which gave the winner automatic entry into the 'Race for the Roses' is to be suspended for 2010.

While many in US racing will not mourn this situation, it must be considered as a blow to trans-atlantic racing co-operation, and it can only be hoped better economic conditions will allow the link to be re-established in 2011.

Single runner come-back for Henderson.

With Nicky Henderson due to re-start his training career on Sunday following his three month ban from entering runners, it had seemed earlier in the week he would have at least four entries at Ffoslas's Sunday national hunt fixture, but at today's forty eight hour decleration stage, he is down to a low-key single entrant at the welsh racecourse, that being Knar Mardy in the FSB Insurance Service by Towergate Maiden Open NH Flat Race. Discussing his entrant, Henderson said,

"She really ought to be competing over hurdles after her two bumper runs last season, but we thought we would give her one more flat run before she goes hurdling."

Winter flat campaign for Kasbah Bliss.

Reiterating his decision not to allow 2009 ladbrokes.com World Hurdle third Kasbah Bliss to race over obstacles this winter, french trainer Francois Doumen spoke today about his plans for a winter flat campaign for his seven year old.

"We gave him a run out on Thursday, and it is hard to believe he had the run in Sunday's Prix du Cadran. He is in super form and condition, and if the ground stays good, we will go for the Prix Royal Oak at Longchamp on 25 October." Doumen added,

"If he comes through that with no ill effects, we will probably go to Hong Kong, and possibly take in the Hong Kong Vase. As for next year, with Yeats now out of the picture, we may look at the Ascot Gold Cup."

O'Connor given all clear for miraculous return.

Just seven months ago, conditional jockey Matt O'Connor was literally at 'deaths door'. A fall from Walkinaisy at the fifth last of the Templemore Beginners Chase at Thurles left him with severe head trauma, and for several weeks he was treated in the intensive care unit at Cork University Hospital, later being discharged on to a recouperation and re-education regime. Now, in what can only be described as a miraculous cure, he has been passed by a neuro surgeon to re-start his racing career at Colm Murphy's yard.

Speaking on behalf of the Irish Turf Club, Medical Officer Dr Adrian Goldrick gave this comment to the media,

"Matt is a very bright young man, and although he has been recertified to commence race riding, he has agreed to take it a step at a time. He has been advised to start with work riding, and when he feels ready, he should slowly re-introduce himself to competitive racing." Dr Goldrick added,

"We are delighted with the outcome of Matt's treatment and recouperation, and we wish Matt every success in the future."

Mulrennan makes his return today at Wolverhampton.

Paul Mulrennan is another jockey getting back into action today. Having broken and dislocated his collar bone during a fall from All Spin at Newcastle in August, following treatment and recouperation, the jockey has passed a medical examination undertaken by the BHA Medical Officer, and Mulrennan is due to re-start his riding career at today's meeting at Wolverhampton.

Trenchant takes in Chepstow ahead of likely Fighting Fifth entry.

One of last season’s top juvenile hurdlers, Trenchant, lines up tomorrow at Chepstow for his first race of the new National Hunt season. Trained by Alan King, Trenchant finished fifth in the 2009 Triumph Hurdle before ending the season just over 10 lengths behind Mikael D’Haguenet at the Punchestown Festival.

Victory at Chepstow on Saturday could make Trenchant a likely entry in the £100,000 WBX.COM Fighting Fifth Hurdle on November 28 at Newcastle. Trenchant’s owners are also part of the syndicate who own Katchit, who also contested the WBX.COM Fighting Fifth Hurdle as a four-year-old.

The WBX.COM Fighting Fifth Hurdle is the first leg of the WBX Hurdling Triple Crown which takes in the three Grade 1 2m hurdle races run in Britain each season: The WBX.COM Fighting Fifth Hurdle, The Christmas Hurdle at Kempton and The Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Any horse that wins these three races in the same season will be eligible for a £1 million bonus.

Noseda still venting his spleen at french starting officials.

For the second year in a row, trainer Jeremy Noseda is feeling very angry with the starting officials at Longchamp.

In the 2008 running of the Prix de L'Abbaye his filly Fleeting Spirit was given a stall which failed to open, and apart from totally upsetting his charge, it also caused the debacle of the race having to be re-run in twilight conditions.

After Sunday's 2009 renewal of the five furlong Group 1, Noseda complained the stalls handlers had not bothered to follow the stable requests with regard to Fleeting Spirit's pre-race handling, and although his filly managed to make a late charge and finished a neck behind winner Total Gallery, Noseda felt her tardy early performance in the race resulted from her pre-race treatment by the Longchamp stalls team. In view of his feelings, Noseda made an official complaint, but yesterday french officials indicated they did not accept the stalls handlers had done anything wrong.

Following the verdict, Noseda renewed his criticism of the Longchamp stalls handlers and the race starter, and indicated he would have reservations about running other horses at Longchamp if they were likely to receive the same sort of disregard to polite requests.

Editor's Comment: Whether it is intentional or not, the Fleeting Spirit incident on top of the controversial disqualification of Dar re mi in the Prix Vermeille is creating the impression french officials are taking a 'cavalier approach' to British owners, trainers and horses. This is a potentially dangerous situation for Longchamp and French racing, for if British establishments start to doubt the fairness of french racing, they will find alternative venues, and this will make french racing less attractive as a worldwide product.
