Hughes treble secures Shergar Cup prizes for Ireland.
A captain's performance by Richard Hughes which included wins on Polly's Mark, We'll Come, and Press The Button ensured Ireland would not only win this year's Shergar Cup competition at Ascot, it mennt with a points score of 49, Hughes secured more points as an individual than any of the other competing teams as a group. With such a riding performance, Hughes thoroughly deserved the Silver Saddle prize for the best individual performance on the day.
Scoop Six rolls-over.
With some long priced winners in this afternoon's Scoop Six races, all interest was over by the end of race five. The combined Win and Bonus Funds now roll-over to next week with a combined value in excess of £350,000.
Long Lashes does what she has to do.
Godolphin's new acquisition from the Jessica Harrington stable Long Lashes was a very clever winner of this afternoon's Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket. In front at the final furlong pole of the seven furlong contest, when the race favourite appeared to be threatened by rivals Blue Maiden and Sent From Heaven, she just increased her pace in the closing stages and landed the first prize with plenty in hand.
This performance is likely to see her cut in price for next year's 1,000 Guineas back at Newmarket, but bearing in mind this was only her second race, if she continues to progress, she could well end up as anti post favourite for the one mile Fillies Classic.
Jukebox Jury finds his form in Rose of Lancaster.
Mark Johnston was delighted his former top class juvenile Jukebox Jury rediscovered his winning form in today's Group 3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock Park. Brought with a perfectly timed late run by Royston Ffrench, the bottom weighted three year old got his head in front as the line approached, and he ran on strongly to deny the well supported favourite Campanologist by a length and a quarter, with John Gosden's Duncan back in third place.
Bearing in mind the Coral Eclipse has now turned up two subsequent Group 1 winners (Rip Van Winkle and Conduit, and now Jukebox Jury, who finished sixth at Sandown, has landed a Group 3, then it certainly boosts the chances of Eclipse fourth Cima de Triomphe in tomorrow's Arlington Million in Chicago.
Tipperary given go-ahead.
Following todays precautionary inspection at Tipperary, tomorrow's card has been given the green light. The course was waterlogged on Thursday, but drying weather over the last couple of days has saved the fixture, and it means Johnnie Murtagh will have to make the overnight dash from Chicago, where he rides Black Bear Island in the Secretariat Stakes, if he is to make his two rides in tomorrow's Listed races at Tipperary.
Al Zir doubles Godolphin Guineas hopes.
Following Atlantis Star's facile win in juvenile company at Pontefract earlier in the week, Godolphin had another impressive two year old winner at Newmarket yesterday when Al Zir toyed with his rivals before running out a comfortable four length victor of a well regarded maiden event.
It is early days, but it would seem Sheikh Mohammed's investment in new bloodstock in recent years could now be paying dividends, and 'the boys in blue' could already have two youngsters who could contest for major honours in next year's 2,000 Guineas.
Arazan to re-start career in 2010.
Due to a combination of unfortunate circumstances, the Aga Khan's well regarded three year old Arazan has not raced this season, and it now looks like he is to be put away for a four year old campaign.
A winner of the Group 2 Futurity Stakes, and third behind Mastercraftsman in last year's National Stakes, Arazan was unable to run in this year's 2,000 Guineas due to the unfavourable firm ground at Newmarket, and then he caught a chest infection which has necessitated a long convalescence. Indicating the intended course of action for the colt, trainer Oxx said,
"He will not be fully fit until around October, and then there will be no major races for him, so we think it better to prepare him properly for a full campaign as a four year old in 2010."
Cypriat jockey to have short spell with Smart.
Ioannis Poullis has already ridden over three hundred winners in his native Cyprus, including 61 in the current season, but he is very keen to score his first winner in Britain, and to that end he is to have a two week working holiday with trainer Brian Smart at his Yorkshire yard.
It is not Poullis's first working visit to Britain, as he has had short spells with Barry Hills and Pat Eddery, but he has yet to trouble the stewards, and he is naturally hopeful Brian Smart will be the man to furnish him with his first winning ride in this country.
The working trip was arranged by Phil Tuck, a former national hunt jockey and stipendiary steward, who is now the Chairman of the Cypriat Stewards Committee.
