Clonmel to inspect tomorrow morning.
The fixture which was re-arranged to take place at Clonmel tomorrow evening is now subject to an 8.30 a m inspection on Monday morning. Prevailing weather conditions are causing concerns the Clonmel ground will not be fit to stage racing for a second time in a week, and the inspection will be the final arbiter on whether the meeting can go ahead as scheduled.
Man bailed on arson charges.
The man who was yesterday arrested and questioned in relation to the suspected arson attack which left two young apprentice jockeys dead and two other injured, has today been released on police bail.
In view of the seriousness of the alleged crime, it would seem likely this individual has been dismissed as being directly involved in the starting of the blaze, for if he had been, it is unlikely he would have been granted bail.
Aqlaam lands his first Group 1.
A winner of the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2008, the William Haggas trained Aqlaam looked destined for big things, but then a serious injury set him back nearly nine months, but since his return to the track in this year's Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, he has continued to progress, and finished a good second to wonder filly Goldikova on his last outing.
Today, he returned to France, and landed his first Group 1 success in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp. Heading the main group in behind early leader Gladiatorus, Aqlaam quickened impressively when asked by Richard Hills, and once he had taken the lead approaching the furlong pole, he was in no mood to be headed, running on strongly to hold off Dermot Weld's Famous Name, while John Gosden's Virtual ran on at one pace to take third position.
The main hopes of the home camp were dashed at the start when Jean-Claude Rouget's Elusive Wave reeared in the stalls and took no part in today's race.
Slow pace causes Fallon and Youmzain to take third place.
After finishing third behind Getaway and Godolphin's Easter Anthem in today's Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Baden in Germany, Kieran Fallon blamed the slow pace of today's contest for his inability to get closer to winning the mile and a half race.
Getaway was winning his third consecutive pattern race since moving to Germany from Andre Fabre's yard in France, and he is now creeping into the reckoning for this year's Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe. While Godolphin's Eastern Anthem ran a solid race in second place, and appears to be returning to his Dubai winning form just in time for this year's Melbourne Cup, the latter race being regarded as his main target for the year.
Rachel Alexandra proves herself a historic filly.
In a weekend were Sea The Stars has proved himself the best horse in Europe, Rachel Alexandra maintained her unbeaten record in America, and created a piece of history in the process.
The three year old became the first filly in the fifty seven year history of the race to win the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga racecourse, and the way she recorded her ninth straight win over older male horses was a massive compliment to her desire to be always victorious.
Leading from the start, jockey Calvin Borel controlled the pace from the front, but in the final furlong, his filly came under constant pressure from Macho Again, but each time the eventual runner up came alongside Rachel Alexandra, the filly kept finding more, and passed the post with a head to spare.
With connections confirming Rachel Alexandra will not run in this year's Breeders Cup, it will now be a question of where the filly will go next.
J J the Jetplane to have a break.
Richard Hannon was reported to be disappointed with J J the Jetplane's very poor performance in yesterday's Betfred Sprint Cup, and his new yard can only put the lack-lustre effort down to a combination of unsuitable ground and potential over-racing. In an attempt to overcome the latter problem, Hannon has confirmed his new charge will now have a holiday before being brought back into action at the prestigious sprint races held in Hong Kong at the end of the year.
Hebridean to return to the flat with Cumani.
When an inmate at Ballydoyle, Hebridean was successful in three of his fifteen races for Aidan O'Brien, but then connections decided they wanted him to go novice hurdling, and he was transferred to Paul Nicholls where he managed to win last year's Adonis Hurdle.
However, connections have once more had a change of mind, and the four year old was moved to Luca Cumani's Newmarket yard two weeks ago, and based on Cumani's website, he will now be trained for a campaign in Dubai in the early part of 2010.
Lucky Thirteen for Fallon.
On his thirteenth ride since his come back on Friday afternoon, Kieran Fallon managed his first winner when Our Kes landed a William Hill sponsored race at Wolverhampton last night. When asked to comment, Fallon had a two word reply, "I'm relieved."
Highly Regal ends Scoop Six interest.
The 33/1 winner Highly Regal ended all interest in yesterday's Scoop Six Bet, and it means a Win Fund of £149,165 rolls over to next Saturday, with the Bonus Pot of £63,927 also rolling over for another week.
Curtain Call suffers fatal injury.
Having pulled up fifty yards from the line in yesterday's Group 3 September Stakes at Kempton Park, a saddened Luca Cumani confirmed Curtain Call had been struck into during the mile and a half contest, and after a thorough examination by veterinarians, the damage to the off hind leg was discovered to be so severe, the one time Epsom Derby fancy had to be humanely euthanised.
Coral report Sea The Stars factor.
Coral bookmakers have reported a 10% increase in turn-over on yesterday's figures, and the firm are accrediting the positive blip to the Sea The Stars factor. Speaking on behalf of the firm, Coral spokesperson David Stevens said,
"The interest in Sea The Stars' participation in the Irish Champion Stakes was fantastic, and although we lost on that particular race, it was more than compensated for by the increased volume of traffic the Sea The Stars factor generated across our entire range of betting facilities. if we could have Saturday's like that once a month, we would be very happy, and the whole of racing should be grateful for a superstar horse like Sea The Stars."
Quinn naturally distraught.
Trainer John Quinn is understood to be distraught at the loss of his two apprentices, Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson, in what appears to be an arson attack on their living accommodation in flats in Norton, near Malton. Quinn was too upset to make comment yesterday, but people close to the trainer say he is finding it hard to come to terms with the loss of his two young apprentice jockeys.
By-standers sickened by Kempton brawl.
A brawl between twelve men in front of the grandstand just before the fourth race at Saturday's Kempton Park meeting was described by by-standers as a sickening experience. Although no one suffered serious injuries, and no arrests were made, the incident certainly upset many of the onlooking spectators, and it is the last thing needed by a racing industry attempting to ride out the worst effects of recession and accompanying unemployment.
Editors note: Although no arrests were made, the racecourse must have close circuit coverage of the people involved in the incident, and in my opinion, these mindless buffoons should be barred forever from every racecourse in the country.
