Stacy Renwick successful in appeal.

At her appeal in front of the BHA Disciplinary Panel today, jockey Stacy Renwick was able to produce recorded evidence as to the moody temperament of Red Wine, the horse on which she had picked up a ten day suspension from the Southwell stewards.

Having viewed all the evidence, the panel concluded, Red Wine was a very difficult ride who had to be produced late in a race, so when Ms Renwick looked like she was not giving maximum effort until the final furlong at Southwell, this was the way the horse had to be ridden to achieve the best possible placing.

In view of the evidence, the panel agreed with Ms Renwick, and quashed the ten day suspension issued by the Southwell stewards.

Hold on Curragh development inevitable.

With the cold economic winds blowing across the length and breadth of the racing industry, it was inevitable the planned new development at the Curragh would be put back until better times prevail. Spokespeople for Ireland's major racecourse have however been at pains to dampen speculation the plans, including a new grandstand and approach road, have been shelved completely, but rather construction has been postponed until finance for the project is easier to obtain.

Unexpected entry for Knight.

Earlier in the year, trainer John Quinn said his Blythe Knight was performing so well on the flat, he felt it was unlikely he would return to racing over timber. However, connections seem to have undertaken a complete U turn, and Blythe Knight will in fact line up against Catch It in Saturday's Elite Hurdle at Wincanton. Commenting yesterday, Quinn said,

"I just thought the track and conditions of the race would suit him, as he has finished second to Catch It there before."

King heads to Haydock.

Ssince finishing second to 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup wiiner War of Attrition in a recent Punchestown run, 2005 Gold Cup winner Kicking King has pleased trainer Tom Taaffe in his work at home. Taaffe is convinced his ten year old is showing some of his old zest, but the only way he can really judge his current level of ability is to put Kicking King up against top opposition. With this in mind, Taaffe has decided to run Kicking King in the Grade One Betfair Chase at Haydock on 22 November, where he will almost certainly come up against Kauto Star and Exotic Dancer.

Navan race developing into important contest.

Top staying hurdler Kazal is to join Hardy Eustace amongst the field for this Sunday's Grade Two Lismullen Hurdle at Navan. Kazal's trainer Eoin Griffin believes Kazal is still a work in progress, and although he has proven stamina, he is still relatively inexperienced in the other areas of top class hurdling, and Sunday's race is an ideal opportunity for Kazal to develop his abilities in amongst a field of top class middle distance hurdlers.

Monets Garden handed tough Paddy Power assignment.

Monets Garden, who on a going day is one of the best two and a half mile steeplechasers on either side of the Irish Sea, has been handed an awesome task in this year's Paddy Power Gold Cup. Having disappointed when he has run at Cheltenham, he has now been handed the double burden of having to carry the top weight of eleven stones twelve pounds in the Grade Three contest.

Crowded House has top rating.

Timeform have rated recent Racing Post Trophy winner Crowded House at 124, which makes him the top rated juvenile in both the UK and Ireland.

His Doncaster performance was on a par with that of Celtic Swing in 1994, and was superior to those recorded by eventual Derby winners; High Chapperal, Motivator, and Authorised.

With most experts agreeing Crowded House has the frame necessary to develop as a three year old, his position at the head of the market for next year's Epsom Classic seems well founded.

A race for cider.

This Sunday's race meeting at Hereford also forms the venue for the Annual Hereford Wife Carrying Race. This unusual, and often hilarious race finds its origins in Finland and the Baltic states, where the 'sport' is regularly practised, with a World Championship being held each year in Finland.

As if any incentive is needed to run off with a woman, the winning couple will receive their combined weitht in the form of cider supplied by sponsors Bulmers.
