Dettori to take over on Dar re mi.

Late this afternoon, connections have confirmed Frankie Dettori is to take over from Jimmy Fortune aboard Dar re mi in the Breeders Cup Turf.

Ryan juvenile lands top French prize.

Kevin Ryan has had a lot of faith in his two-year-old Our Jonathan this season, and despite the trainer's own misgivings about the virtually heavy going at Maisons-Laffitte this afternoon, the handler watched with delight as Jamie Spencer gave a master class aboard Our Jonathan in the Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte. Controlling the race from the front, Spencer had plenty in hand to hold off Ascot Glory by a length and a half, with Dolled Up coming in a close third.

A delighted Ryan said,

"I thought Our Jonathan was excellent when he won the Cornwallis Stakes, but with an enterprising ride in today's race, Jamie proved he is still progressing , and we can now go into next season with a great deal of confidence that he could land a Group 1."

Planet of Sound win reverberates in big race markets.

Richard Johnson got a great tune out of Planet of Sound as he totally outclassed his rivals in the latter stages of today's William Hill sponsered Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter.

With Cornas and Mahogany Blaze going clear before the second last, it seemed certain they would fight out the finish of today's two mile one and a half furlong Grade 2 contest, but Richard Johnson did not panic aboard Planet of Sound, and by the final fence he had brought last season's Arkle Trophy third alongside Cornas, and then with a magnificent leap, the Philip Hobbs trained gelding sealed his success in the race, running on strongly to score by nearly four lengths from the gallant Cornas.

Despite today's short trip, Tom George's Nacarat was disappointing, and after the race it was Planet of Sound who was being supported for several of the upcoming major steeplechases.

King keen to assess Manyriverstocross.

Last seen finishing second to Nanton in the Mallard Stakes on the flat at Doncaster, progressive handicapper Manyriverstocross makes his debut over hurdles in tomorrow's Sunshine Radio Novice Hurdle at Chepstow, and trainer Alan King admits he is as keen as anyone to see how his new recruit handles racing over timber.

"He has schooled well, but the acid test always comes in a race, and although I believe he could be a very useful recruit, we will find out tomorrow how good he might be."

Venalmar to make Thurles come-back.

A close second in the 2008 Ballymore Properties Hurdle to Fivefourthree, the Mouse Morris trained Venalmar has not raced since breaking down during the 2008 Punchestown Festival.

However, Morris believes he has his charge back in fine condition, and it was confirmed today, Venalmar will make his debut over fences in Thursday's Beginners Chase at Thurles.

Hardy's future to be decided on home gallops.

Two time Cheltenham Champion Hurdle winner Hardy Eustace is back in full training ahead of a possible tilt at the Grade 1 Morgiana Hurdle, a race he won last year from Sizing Europe. But trainer Dessie Hughes admits the Punchestown run was his only good performance last season, and like many, the handler is wondering if time has caught up with his twelve year old,

"Hardy Eustace is looking good at the moment on the home gallops, but if I think he lacks that bit of fire over the next week or so, he will be retired. We will just have to see how it goes, but either way, he has done more than enough for us over the years, and I have no intention of making him do the impossible."

O'Grady joins Henderson in waiting game.

Nicky Henderson indicated in an interview yesterday, the Queen's Barber Shop will only run in the Paddy Power Gold Cup on 14 November at Cheltenham if he receives a reasonable weight from the handicapper. Today, Edward O'Grady put in the same condition for Saturday's Naas winner Tranquil Sea, saying:

"I would like to enter Tranquil Sea in the Paddy Power Gold Cup, but with the race being an extended two and a half miles, the ground will have to be right, and more importantly, the handicapper will not have to over-burden him for his Naas success."

Highclere to move into national hunt ownership.

Over the last seventeen years, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing have had a large number of high profile winners in european flat racing, but in an unexpected move, the syndicate are to commence ownership of horses operating in the national hunt sphere.

Managing Director Harry Herbert today confirmed the syndicate have purchased three year old gelding Sunwise out of John Oxx's yard for £135,000 - and the youngster will now be sent to leading trainer Paul Nicholls to learn his trade ahead of a novice hurdling campaign. Herbert also confirmed,

"Sunwise is our first purchase, but we expect he will be joined by one or two other prospective national hunt horses over the next few weeks, and this is certainly an avenue of racing we intend to explore in the future."

Hughes waiting on the weather for Down Royal selection.

At the moment, Dessie Hughes is inclined to run Shindlers Hunt in the jmwine.com Chase and stable mate Siegemaster in the ladbrokes.com Chase at this weekend's Down Royal meeting, but the handler admits he could change his plans if the forecast heavy rain does actually materialise on Friday. Discussing his options, Hughes said earlier today,

"Schindlers Hunt does not like it too soft, so if we get a deluge he will probably not run in the jmwine.com Chase. But Siegemaster does like it soft, so we could move him up from the ladbrokes.com Chase into the big one."

Meanwhile, Mouse Morris seems fairly certain 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner War of Attrition will take his chance in the jmwine.com Chase no matter what the underfoot conditions.

Another Auteuil assignment for Jumbo.

Having already gained experience of Auteuil racecourse in Paris, Edward O'Grady's Punchestown Grade 1 Champion Four Year Old Novice Hurdle winner Jumbo Rio is being prepared for a raid on the Grade 1 Prix Renaud du Vivier at Auteuil on 15 November.

Shocking snatches Melbourne Cup from Crime Scene.

With a perfectly timed challenge, jockey Corey Brown brought the Mark Kavanagh trained Shocking to head Godolphin's Crime Scene in the latter stages of today's Melbourne Cup at Flemington. The four-year-old then stayed on strongly to hold the renewed challenge of the Godolphin horse. Mourilyan, an inmate in Gary Moore's stable earlier in the season before transferring to Australian ownership, put in a good late run to snatch third place, but the Ian Williams trained Munsef and Luca Cumani's Basaltico failed to show at the business end of today's Group One contest.

After the race, Godolphin's Saeed bin Suroor did indicate Crime Scene's second has made the 'boys in blue' even more determined to win Australia's major horseracing prize, and they now intend to send their leading stayers to Australia in future years.

Cheltenham warm-up for Masterminded.

In preperation to defend his Tingle Creek Chase crown at Sandown Park on 05 December, Paul Nicholls is apparently giving due consideration to Masterminded having a warm-up run in the Connaught Cup on 15 November at Cheltenham.

Crowley to take over from Sanders for Beckett yard.

Ralph Beckett has decided to appoint Jim Crowley as his number one jockey instead of Seb Sanders for the 2009 2010 turf flat season. While thanking Sanders for his efforts over the last few years, Beckett pointed out the jockeyhad a close association with the Sir Mark Prescott stable, and when conflicts arose, Sanders invariably opted for the Prescott mount. As Beckett is keen to ensure the best possible service for his owners, he feels appointing Jim Crowley will ensure they obtain a consistant service from a top class jockey.
