Ladbrokes introduce revolutionary betting option.

Ahead of next week's Cheltenham Festival, Ladbrokes have today launched a new facility for at-home punters, which they call, 'Betting After The Off'.

In essence, the company will now agree to accept bets placed on all UK and Irish horse races until well into the latter stages of each race. The price honoured will be the last show prior to the start of the race, and the new facility will be available to all on-line and telephone punters with a Ladbrokes account.

Speaking about this revolutionary development in betting, Ladbrokes spokesperson David Williams said, " Missing the off before you have managed to get your bet on is infuriating to many punters. We are now giving some slack in the rope, and the punters a chance to watch how a race unfolds before stepping in for a bet.

It's the biggest development we have offered in a long time, but having undertaken a softly softly trial since the start of the year, we feel it is simple, and ideal for the casual punter. Based on our current feedback, and the increase seen in turnover, we believe we are on to a winner".

Impressive work out leads to Sicilian plunge.

Following a very impressive piece of work at Leopardstown after Sunday's race meeting, the Willie Mullins trained Sicilian Secret has become the subject of a huge gamble for this year's Cheltenham Champion Bumper, with leading bookmakers now quoting him at around four to one clear favourite for this year's race.

Sublimity also impressive.

Former Cheltenham Champion Hurdler Sublimity was also very impressive in his post card Leopardstown gallop, and trainer Robbie Elliot believes if the going at Cheltenham is good, then his former champion will go close in his attempt to regain his title.

Hardy Eustace confirmed for seventh successive year.

Three time Cheltenham Festival winner Hardy Eustace is to run in this year's Champion Hurdle, and this will represent his seventh successive year as a competitor at Prestbury Park. After a successful training spin, trainer Dessie Hughes has confirmed his veterans well being, and he is happy to see his old battler take on the youngsters in this year's hurdling blue ribbon race.

Two show true talent in Newbury warm up.

Nicky Henderson had a broad grin on his face after watching Punchestowns put in a sparkling training run at Newbury this weekend. The trainer is confident with the improving going, Punchestowns will return to his early season going in next week's Ladbrokes World Hurdle.

Four year old hurdler Starluck showed considerable speed in his gallop, and combined with his already proven jumping ability, trainer Alan Fleming was also reported to be delighted with his pre Cheltenham preparation.

Carberry taking no chances.

When Charlie Yardbird fell and deposited Paul Carberry on the turf on Saturday at Navan, it now appears the jockey received a kick on the bone just below one of his knees. As we reported yesterday, Carberry was shaken and sore after the fall, but happily no bone damage has been incurred.

However, as a precaution, Carberry has decided to rest his leg until the weekend, as he wants to ensure he is one hundred per cent fit for next week's Cheltenham Festival.

Cheltenham considering watering.

As of today, Cheltenham is said to be riding good to soft, but if the forecast rain does not materialise over this week, officials have plans to water the Prestbury Park courses, so as to ensure safe jumping ground for the four day Festival Meeting.

Royal party expected for Gold Cup Day.

The latest indications suggest Her Majesty the Queen and a comprehensive group of other royals are expected to attend Cheltenham Gold Cup Day on Friday 13 February. It is believed the Queen is keen to be present to watch her Barber Shop take his chance in this year's race, and one suspects, the royal party are hopeful of a good run from their progressive young chaser.

We can all help!

To obtain the additional funds they require to complete the purchase and development of their new permanent home at Woodbridge County Wicklow, the Irish Horse Welfare Trust are to hold an internet auction during the last two weeks of March.

At this stage, they are making an appeal to all sectors of the equine industry, and also to any interested members of the general public, to get involved by donating items to be auctioned.

Shirley books Cheltenham appearance.

Shirley Casper, who was a useful performer on the flat, and also ran fourth in the 2007 Cheltenham Champion Bumper, scored her first victory over timber when winning yesterday's Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden Hurdle at Leopardstown.

Connections have now confirmed the Leopardstown victory has earned her a place in the line-up for the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle at next week's four day meeting.

On course bookies object to Betfair area.

Bookmakers with long standing pitches at Ascot are seeking representation with the Ascot authorities over the proposed Betfair area at the Berkshire course.

Betfair had negotiated the area, where punters can access terminals to place bets on the exchange, as part of their sponsorship deal with Ascot. But now it seems the other on course bookmakers are not happy with the 'large pitch', and one suspects sparks will fly as negotiations take place over the next few weeks.
